UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma

Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production

The Final Major Project (Year Two)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

FMP unit is the summative unit in the final year of the two-year qualification. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name
Anji Santhosh (AJ)

Disciplines
(primary/secondary
) Animation
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography, 3D,
etc)
Project (e.g. short
film, music video,
animation, Animation scene from a show (Why Can’t We Befriend our
documentary, advert, Life?)
branding, etc.)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
This section provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarize
your progress and achievements through the entire course and the knowledge,
skills and understanding you have acquired. What do you know now, and what it
means to you, compare with what you knew and could do before you started the
course and how this has influenced your choice of pathway and your project
proposal.

I feel as if in the second year alone I have improved massively in how I write,
animate, edit videos etc. I have noticed I put much more thought and time than
how I used to. I have used every mistake or flaw in lesson as a learning curve and
I have also learnt some valuable lessons in life in general. I am much faster at
finishing paperwork and hand in projects earlier than expected or on time. Being
able to work at home has also increased my quality in time management.

I was not as skilled and educated on matters like this before in my first year and
even during my FMP. For example, I had only made 2 sheets of storyboards for
my final project whereas now I would have at least made 3 or 4. I feel as if I am
also letting myself get invited to the adult world and constantly being able to learn
new things while also being independent.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and
aims of your project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what
you anticipate producing, the levels of and types of resources that you will need
and an indication of the form in which you will complete and present your project
realisation within the allocated timescale.

I will be animating my characters (Haku and Anzu) in the style of comedy anime
“POP TEAM EPIC”. The title will be called “Why Can’t We Befriend our Life?” “Why
Can’t We Befriend our Life?” will include 2 characters Haku and Anzu two
college/university students battling depression through humour and jokes. I will
have my friends and I voice act with a script around a table. I have handpicked a
few scenes from different episodes and will use them as inspiration to animate
similar scenarios and put them all together so it is one big episode. I will also of
course use my own ideas that I include in my script. POP TEAM EPIC has a
unique style of comedy which is what I would also like my characters to be a part
of. It is a show that has multiple short episodes in one with different 2 different
versions. One half is fully voiced by female voice actors and the other half is male
voice actors.

I have always wanted to animate my characters in a comedy show since that is

what I planned a long time ago and I see this to be the best opportunity to show off
my animation skills and techniques and well as learning new ones. My aim is to
share my work with an audience that like comedy and anime:
 I will be making sure all my designs of my characters are in final before I
start to animate them.
 I will include voice acting.
 I will have subtitles the bottom, so it looks like a TV show.
 I will research different techniques of animation and put in my knowledge of
what I have learnt so far during my lessons.
 I will be animating them in a simplified artstyle.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
This section provides an opportunity to explain how you will reflect on, and
evaluate, your work as both an on-going activity and at the conclusion of the
project. You should describe how you intend to record your decision making and
how you will document changes to your ideas as work progresses. The evaluation
should be referenced to your stated aims and be reflective and analytical rather
than a description of actions completed. Remember that your evaluation should be
an on-going process and not just left to the completion of the project.

I will be recording my progress by writing in the daily diary section to reflect on:

 What I did in the lesson.

 What obstacles did I face?
 How did I get over that obstacle?
 What will I be doing next lesson?
 How do I feel about how the project is going?

These prompts will be my main base for each diary entry. It is a good way to
structure an entry so you can reflect on what you did and plan for what you will do
in the future.

If at all I feel the need to change something or work more on my idea, I will tweak
this document and discuss my ideas with peers and my lecturers to see their
opinion about it. It is important to get other people’s view on work that will be
exhibited to other people so you’re not too biased.

Proposed Research Sources

These will be resources and influences to inform your project, which may include
audio-visual texts, articles, websites etc. Try to be as detailed as you can with this
section with regards to SPECIFIC research material

I will be finalising my designs for Haku and Anzu ready to animate and may create
some minor background characters. I will be researching on different colour pallets
for them and making sure they are acceptable to animate with.

I will be researching how POP TEAM EPIC structures the order of their clips to
make the perfect sequence on how they execute comedy shorts.

I will also be researching different styles of animation. I will be experimenting with

stretch and squash, smear shots and using more stop-mo animation and tweening
for backgrounds etc.
Since I want my animation to be exaggerated and filled with expression, I will be
practicing drawing different expressions in my artstyle with the help of YouTube
and website tutorials. The anime “Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt” artstyle is
more of less how I want my own artstyle to look like and they use various
animation styles to make their motions look more fluid.
Equipment Required
E.g., cameras, computers, software etc. Be as specific as you can with regards to
software as you may need a variety of programs.

 I will need a computer/PC/laptop to animate, draw and research on

 I will need a recording device to record the conversations
 I will need a drawing/graphics tablet to animate/draw
 I will need to use Adobe Animate to animate
 I will need Premiere Pro to edit my videos and clips
 I will need to use a sketchpad to sketch ideas and a notepad to write down
some quick ideas

Resources Required
Props, locations, costumes, make-up, sounds (where applicable)

 I will need audio/video files of voice actors as Haku and Anzu

 I will need a finalised artstyle
 I will need finalised designs of characters

Skills to develop/learn
Appropriate skills for chosen pathway (this will be helpful for staff to know to
organise particular workshops). Be as specific as you can with the skills you might
need to develop.

 Voice acting – since I am not very skilled at it

 Different ways to animate movement – I want to learn the best way on how
to animate movement.

Personnel and responsibilities

The Final Major Project is designed to be YOUR personal project. You are working
independently but may require some assistance or include models, actors, crew
etc. Identify all personnel involved. If it will just be yourself, please make this clear.

I will need assistance from my friends and or my sister for voice acting but
everything else like animating and editing I will be doing by myself.

Intended audience and context

Be specific about your intended audience. This should include, where

possible, age range, specific interests of audience, other demographic
considerations.
The context will be how and where your finished product will be used for;
e.g., a film festival, a TV channel, an advertising campaign, an animated
series, an art installation, an online platform, etc.

My intended audience are the following:

 Anime fans (who enjoy comedy as well)
 Comedy fans
 Animation fans
 People who enjoy shows like “POP TEAM EPIC”, “The Disastrous Life of
Saiki K”, “Asobi Asobase” etc
 Age range between 14 – 30+ because of the humour being similar in that
age range.

Creative Mindsets
Identify how you will be using or including the six Creative Mindsets for your FMP
(where applicable). Check the outline for each CM on the PowerPoint presentation
delivered during the FMP pitch.

Ownership

I will be only having my work as my own with the help of peers and friends.

Critical Thinking

I will be analysing my strengths and weaknesses and asking lecturers for help
when I need it. I will be open to constructive criticism.

Problem Solving

I will be able to problem solve without needing much assistance and go through
problems calmly.

Creativity

I will be making sure to be creative with my work whether that be through my script,
characters and animation.

Risk Taking

I will be trying my best to take risks and come out of my comfort zone through
animation styles.

Collaboration

I will be collaborating with my friends to come up with different scenes and

voice acting.

You will be expected to engage with and reflect on the use of these Creative
Mindsets throughout your FMP from start to finish
How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 10 weeks is not long. Just think how fast this year has
gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF
INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
