UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma

Unit 13: Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production

The Final Major Project (Year Two)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

FMP unit is the summative unit in the final year of the two-year qualification. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth.

Name
Ella Justice
Stuck in the loop.

Disciplines
(primary/secondary) Video
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography, 3D, etc)
Project (e.g., short
film, music video, Short film
animation,
documentary, advert,
branding, etc.)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)

I have been on the media course for three years during this I have learnt a load of different
skills such as software skills programs for example Premiere Pro, After Effects, Cinema
4D and animate. When I first started, I hadn’t really used or heard about some of these
software’s such as premiere pro, Cinema 4D, Animate, photoshop and After Effects.
As the year went on, we were given different assignments that helped me build my
confidence with these different software’s. For example, I hadn’t done animation before
stating media, now I am able to make my way around Animate more easily and make
things move using different tools such as Tweening, Rotoscoping and stop-motion.

Another example of this would be for another assignment we needed to create our own
title sequence, I chose to base my title sequence on Doctor Who, for this I used the
software Premiere pro and After Effect. While I created my title sequence using the
software After Effects, I learnt news skills using YouTube to create a vortex to go with my
title sequence. During using After Effects, I used and leant new skills and effects that I
hadn’t used before. When I first started media, I didn’t have any idea about how to use
animate since starting media I have learnt how to rotoscope and tween, now I am able to
use the program more confidently than when I first started. While Working on these
assignments for video and Animation I have widened my knowledge and built up my
confidence.
For technical skills I have certainly learnt loads since being on this course. Before starting
this course, I had never used a drawing tablet, a tripod, a DSLR camera or a Mac computer.
Throughout the year I think I have improved while using these items and I am able to use
these items and software more confidently. which helped to build up my confidence with
the different assignments they gave us.
Another thing I think I have improved on is my writing and researching skills, As I went
through the different assignments for theory, I think I got better with understanding why
companies use certain strategy’s while advertising their products and how to properly
analyse adverts. While doing these assignments I think my witting skills have got much
better as I’m able to go into more detail when analysing in different projects. Something I
am proud of that involved researching and analysing was in my last FMP project last year,
for
my research page I got a good grade as I did a lot of research into different sections of my
FMP theme which was colour.

I think I have also grown as a person and have become more confident in myself, when I
first started, I was quite shy but as I continued this course, I think I have become more
confident with talking to other people such as classmates and the lecturers.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

Person wakes up by their alarm clock – At 7am. They then spend 2 hrs on their phone not
noticing the time going past while they scroll through their phone. They finally get up but
still on their phone they get dressed. They go out to Bournemouth they don’t notice that
there is a meteor on its way to earth, the person doesn’t notice what’s happening until it
hits, and he looks up as his phone died and see’s there is nobody else around.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
The way I intend on being able to reflect on my on-going work is by creating a Time log
on my Weebly that I will write in everyday at the start of the lesson explaining what I plan
to be doing that lesson and at the end of the lesson talking about what I have achieved
during the lesson and if anything didn’t go to plan and explain how I solved the problem.
To back this up I will try and take Screenshots and Photos of the BTS and use them while I
talk about what I have done during that lesson and what did and didn’t go well during the
lesson too. Another way I can record my progress would be peer feedback through
questionnaires and surveys. This will also be handy for when I write my evaluation at the
end as I have evidence from people’s surveys that I can use to analyse my project.

Section 4: Proposed Research Sources

Some proposed research that I will carry out throughout the production of the short film
will be Google, YouTube and other social media such as Tik Tok. I will be using Google
to research both primary and secondary research to do with my project. Another use for
google is so I can research into the different subjects such as the kind of different short
films, colour theory, different shot types and body language and how mobile phones have
changed over the past decades and how they can effect someone. I will also use Google
so I can look up how to do certain editing techniques that I might use on my FMP. So, I
have an idea of what I could use for my short film.

https://blog.celtx.com/what-is-a-short-film/
This website talks about what a short film is and what other kind of short films that are
out there. When looking at the website I can see that there are three kinds of short films
such as a narrative, documentary and an Avant-Garde short film.

https://www.colorsexplained.com/color-red-meaning-of-the-color-red/
This website talks about different colours and what they can mean, also giving examples
whether they are positive or negative colours.

https://www.careersinfilm.com/types-of-shots-in-film/
This website goes through the different shot types and then shows an example of these
shots they are talking about. The website talks about the following shot types: Extreme
wide shot, Wide shot, Full shot, medium shot, Close up, Extreme close up and a
establishing shot.

https://www.verywellmind.com/understand-body-language-and-facial-expressions-

This website talks about how body language is important when talking to each other, It
goes into detail of the different body language such as facial expressions, Gestures, arms
and legs and posture. I will be use this to research how body language is important when
acting in movies to portray a character.
https://studentwork.prattsi.org/infovis/visualization/evolution-of-mobile-phone/
This website shows and talks about how mobile phones have changed from 1973 to
nowadays. They also show some examples of the phones that were used back in the 90s
and how they have evolved from just being able to make a phone call to now being able
to go on the internet and play games. I’m going to use this website to talk about how
mobile phones have evolved and changed. This goes well with my project as I’m talking
about mobiles phones and how we are always using them, this website shows how mobile
phones first became a needed item.

YouTube
I’m going to use this platform so I can have a look at a few examples that someone else
has made to get an idea for my own short film. They have a few short films on they’re
that people have made to do with mobile phones. I have had a look and got a few ideas of
what I could possibly do for my own short film.

https://youtu.be/0Y6v_1dwF3c
This short film is from YouTube, it shows how we are addicted to our phones and can
spend all day on them. I was thinking of doing something like this for my own FMP
project. I liked the way it was edited when the characters were on their phones, but we
were able to see them scowling through on the screen. This makes it more interactive as
the viewer can see what the character can see.

https://youtu.be/GXdVPLj_pIk
This short film is also from YouTube. It’s a different take from the first example. I also
liked the way this was edited with the different shot types and the use of the timelapse.
Watching these have given me a idea for my own short film ,it has given me an idea of
the kind of shots I could do and also the kind of editing too.
Section 5: Equipment Required

For my FMP I will need the following equipment a

camera, Tripod.
Microphone maybe to record voices.

At college, I’ll need Adobe premiere pro and maybe After Effects to create the effects of
the people scrolling through their phone. So, you are ablet to see it on screen too.
And a Mac computer.

Section 6: Resources Required

Some of the locations for the FMP – Beach, Bus stop and college (To edit it all together)
Costumes for characters – Normal clothes.
Props such as mobile phone.
Maybe a microphone.

Section 7: Skills to develop/learn

Some skills I might need to develop for this project would be how to do certain effects
using either after Effects or Premiere pro / learning new skills in Premier pro and After
Effects. I will also develop my sound recording skills.

Section 8: Personnel and responsibilities

Need a character to act with – There job would be just sitting their playing on their phone.
Might need someone to be the camera Operator to press play.

Section 10: Creative Mindsets

Creative mindsets that I think I will be using while researching, planning and creating my
FMP are. I will be researching into different subjects that tie into my idea for my FMP.

Collaboration: I will be working with some actors and with a small team to film.

Ownership: I’ll be using my own ideas to create my FMP and I will be working
independently while I research into the needed subjects and plan for my FMP.

Critical thinking: Throughout the FMP progress I will be constantly evaluating and
reflecting on my own work and seeking advice from my peers. To do this I will be writing
in my production diary using screenshots from what I have been working on during the
day, also uploading BTS pictures when filming.

Creativity: I am creating my own idea and I will try out new things.
Risk taking, I will be using new effects in postproduction that I haven’t used before. I will
also use different camera shots that I haven’t used before working on this project.

Problem Solving: progress of making short film relies on different problem solving such
working out where you’re going to film, scrips, storyboards telling where actors need to be
during a scene and sound design.

Section 9: Intended audience and context

The intended audience for this would be teenagers and young adults. This is because it is
mostly the teenager aged 16-24 and young adult’s aged 25-34 demographic that spend the
most time on their phone throughout the past few years. It has slowly crept up throughout
the years especially for the age range of 45-54, aged 55-65 and aged 65+. For the age range
16-24 it has been the same throughout the years accept the year 2014 where the percentage
went down slightly from 90% to 84%.

The demographic for people who use their phones the most in the UK from 2012 to 2021.
From 2012 the most people who used mobile phones were aged between 16-24 years old,
As the years went on this age bracket slowly crept up each year. On the other hand, the
demographic for the age bracket 25-34 slowly crept up from the start of 2013, in 2020 both
the age range of 16-24 and the age bracket of 25-34 were at the same percentage of time
spent on their mobile phones, which was 98%.

Throughout the years, all the age demographics who are younger 16-24, 25,34, 35,44
and some who are older 45 ,54, 55-64 and people aged 65 and over, the percentage went
up throughout the years, some more slowly than others and some shot up quickly from the
start. For the younger generation the stats were already quite high from 2012, On the other
hand the older generation the stats were quite low, but throughout the years the older
generation stats started to climb for example the age demographic of age between 55-64
and people aged 65+ started to climb slowly from the year 2013 .From 2014 the age group
of people aged 45-54 started to climb slowly increasing, from 46% in 2012 to 98% in 2021.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/300402/smartphone-usage-in-the-uk-by-age/
This link shows the bar chart that shows the different age demographics and then show
how the usage of the mobile phone have slowly crept up from the year 2012 to the year
2021. I used the chart so I can analyse how the usage of phones has increased over the past
couple years. I think the audience that will watch my FMP would be young adults and
teenagers I think it will appeal to them more as they are mostly the age group that uses
mobile phones the most and use social media more than the other demographics. Such as
Instagram, snapchat and YouTube.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – Just think how fast this year has gone so far. Plan
ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.
4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work, we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
