Itisdescriptionofaseaadventureexperiencedbythenarratorandhisfamily.The
narrator,hiswifemary,sonJonathananddaughterSuzannewereaccompaniedby
twoexperiencedsailorsAmericanLerryvigilandSwissHerbSeigler.InJuly1976
theysetsailfromplymouth,EnglandinWaveWalker,aspeciallybuiltboat.Thefirst
partofthejourneywaspleasantandeverythingwentonsmoothlyuptoCapeTown.
UnfriendlyweatherandgiganticwavesofSouthernIndianOceancompelledthesailors
toslowtheirspeed,dropstormjibandtakeotherprecautions.Thedangerwasso
implicitthatthesailorscompletedliferaftdrillandattachedlifelinesandlifejackets.On
2January1977agiantwavehitwavewalkerandcausedmuchdamagetoit.The
sailorsgotinjuredandthenarratorwasthrownoverboardbuthemanagedtogethold
ofwavewalkersguardrails.Inspiteofhismultipleinjuries,hetookholdofthewheel.
Inanatmosphereoffearandpanicmarytookchargeofthewheelwhereaslarryand
Herbstartedpumpingoutwater.Thenarratormanagedtostretchandcoverconvas
acrossthegapstopreventwaterfromenteringtheship.Theirhandpumpsstopped
workingandelectricpumpsshortcircuited.Theyweredistressedandbusyinpumping,
steering,repairingandradiosignalling.Theystudiedchartsandcalculativelydecided
toreachanearbyisland.Theyallweretoobusyinrescueworkanddidnottakeany
mealfortwodays.Childrenwereinjuredtoobuttheydidnotdrawattentionoftheir
parentsandjustallowedthemtosaveWavewalker.Thechildrensaidthattheywere
notafraidtodieiftheycouldallbetogether.Thenarratorbecamemoredetermined
andstrongseeingchildrenscourage.Finallytheyreached.IleAmsterdem,avolcanic
islandwheretheywerewelcomedby28inhabitants.Thus,thecollectivestrengthand

ApowerfuldynastyruledEgypt.TutthelastkingofthisdynastydiedWhenhewas
justateenagerbutthecauseofhisdeathwasnotknown.Thattombwasdiscovered
