Exclusive images created by Project Projects for the exhibit, "FAST TRASH: Roosevelt Island‘s Pneumatic Tubes and the Future of Cities."
Network and location maps of Barcelona and Roosevelt Island's pneumatic trash collection systems. The pink areas represent zones of pneumatic collection in the city, the red area corresponds to the Gothic Quarter. The red dots represent inlets. In the Gothic Quarter, chutes are are on the street; on Roosevelt Island, they are inside buildings.
Note from the creators:
You will see that the inlets are concentrated over a small part of the tube network in Barcelona. This is because we represented the total build out of the tube network when all phases are complete but we only show valves where they have already been installed.
We generated these maps based on information from Envac, the operator of the system in Barcelona, and Jerry Sorgente of the DSNY, operator of the system on Roosevelt Island. We intentionally simplified these maps to invite people to compare the scope and configuration of the systems.
