Macbeth:ATouchofTheSupernatural

InWilliamShakespeare's,
TheTragedyofMacbeth,
itiscleartoseethatMacbeth
becomesobsessedwiththepowerofthesupernaturalastheplayprogresses.Whenhefirsts
meetsthewitches,Macbethisskepticalanddoesnotfullybelievetheirprophecy.Itiswhenthe
firstpartoftheprophecyiscompleted,asRossdeliversthenewsfromtheKing,thatMacbeth
putsmoretrustinthewitchesandsaysGlamisandThaneofCawdor:/Thegreatestis
behind/(Shakespeare.I.III.116120).ThisisthestartingpointofMacbeth'sdownfallinto
hisobsessionwiththesupernaturalways.Hebecomesfixatedonthefactthatthewitcheswere
rightandasthereadersoonfindout,willdoanythingtomaketheirpropheciescometrue.As
Macbethsinksdeeperintohisobsession,heplacesevenmoreofhistrustinthesupernatural,yet
hebeginstohavenightmaresandseeghostsbecausehe'ssoinvested.AsMacbethseesBanquos
ghost,hecriesPrithee,seethere!behold!look!lo!howsayyou?/...Ifcharnelhousesandour
gravesmustsend/Thosethatweburryback(III.IV.6973)WhenBanquo'sghostisseen,it
showsjusthowfarfromsanityMacbethisbeingpushedbecauseofhisstrongfixationonthe
prophecy.AsMacbethisconfusedheturnsagaintotheonlythingthatmakessensetohimat
thatmoment,whichisthepowerofthesupernaturalandheisdraggedfurtherintohisobsession.
Finally,Macbeth'sobsessionofthesupernaturalgrowstoostrongandhegoestoseethewitches
again,expectingthemtohavetheanswers,completelytrustingthem.Afteryetanotherfearfilled

breakdown,Macbethdecidesheshadenough,hesaysIwilltomorrow/AndbetimesIwill
totheweirdsisters/MoreshalltheyspeakforIambenttoknow(III.IV.132134).When
Macbethmeetswiththewitcheshedemandstoknowthesecretsofhisfuture,andastheytell
himitseemsquitepossiblethattherewillbenoendtoMacbeth'srule,thisdefinitelydoesnot
helphisevergrowingobsessionandheagainbecomesfixatedontheserevelations,trustinghis
verylifetowhatthesupernaturalbeingssaid.Macbethbecomesfixatedovermanythings
throughouttheplay,butthepowerofthesupernaturaliswhatheismostobsessedwithand
definitelywhatdriveshiminsaneprogressivelythroughouttheplay.
