ASHRAE DL Seminar on Indoor environment quality and ventilation

This ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) seminar is jointly organized by ASHRAE Singapore
Chapter (ASC) and Singapore Polytechnic. We aim to share with participants the following
ASHRAE DL topics from Mr Bjarne Olesen and Mr Max Sherman:

International standards for the indoor environment - where are we and do they apply worldwide?
Indoor environment- health-comfort and productivity
HAZE related health implications, pm2.5 awareness, related ventilation strategies and standards
Ventilation: the once and future king.
Range hoods and smart ventilation strategies for residential buildings
Recent interesting aspects of ASHRAE Standard 62.2.

MAX H. SHERMAN, PH.D

SENIOR SCIENTIST
LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY

Dr. Max Sherman is a Staff Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
and is senior advisor on residential matters. His research career spans over 35 years and
200 publications, most of which focus on buildings, energy efficiency, IAQ and HVAC. His
most recognized research areas also include ventilation, thermal distribution systems,
infiltration, IAQ and envelope-dominated buildings. He gives technical lectures frequently and
has appeared in the popular media on issues of energy, ventilation and duct tape.
Dr. Sherman was one of the youngest to be made an ASHRAE Fellow and has had a
distinguished career since being elevated including winning the Holladay Distinguished
Fellow awardSocietys highest technical level. He has received the Exceptional
Achievement award and most recently the Standards Achievement award. He has chaired
SPC 62.2, the committee which developed ASHRAEs residential ventilation standard. He
served as a Director-At-Large for the Society in 2001-2004 as well as numerous councils and
committees. He continues to be an active member of ASHRAE including work on SSPC 62.2
and international activities. He currently chairs the Presidential Ad-hoc committee on the
Residential Market.

ASHRAE DL Seminar on Indoor environment quality and ventilation

Duration of Talk: 6 hours
Topics:
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT - WHERE ARE WE AND
DO THEY APPLY WORLDWIDE?
On the international level ISO (International Organization for Standardization, CEN (European
Committee for Standardization and ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air
Conditioning Engineers are writing standards related to the indoor environment. Several of these
standards have been developed mainly by experts from Europe, North America and Japan, thus
guaranteeing a worldwide basis. Are there, however, special considerations related to other parts
of the world (lifestyle, outdoor climate, and economy), which are not dealt with in these standards
and which will require revision?
Ventilation: The Once and Future King
Before man lived indoors, there was ventilation. This talk will look at an historical perspective of
ventilation, including the reasons for ventilation then and now, the methods of ventilation then and
now, and the amounts of ventilation then and now. In our modern society outdoor air can contain a
variety of contaminants that we do not want in our buildings and this talk will discuss some reasons
for not wanting to ventilate.
HAZE related health implications, pm2.5 awareness, related ventilation strategies and
standards
How does HAZE affect our health? What can we do during HAZE period? The panel discussion will
bring us better prepared for the HAZE
INDOOR ENVIRONMENT- HEALTH-COMFORT AND PRODUCTIVITY
People spend in industrialized countries more than 90 % of their lives in an artificial indoor
environment (home, transportation, work). In typical office buildings the cost of people is a factor
100 higher than energy costs, which make the performance of people at their work significantly
more important than energy costs. The task is to optimize indoor environmental conditions for
health, comfort and performance while conserving energy. The talk presents an update on todays
requirement for a healthy and comfortable indoor environment and the influence on peoples
productivity in offices, schools and other places of work.
62.2: ASHRAEs Residential Ventilation Standard
In 1996 ASHRAE decided to split one of its major standards, Standard 62 into pieces representing
different major occupancies. ASHRAE Standard 62.2 was first passed in 2003 and is republished
regularlythe most recent of which is 2013. This talk will explain what is in the standard, what it
means to occupants and to those professionals who do residential design, and a bit of how it all
came to be. The enhanced interest in high performing homes has generated a string of
controversies on facets of this standard and these will be discussed.
