Unit Statement: Digital Citizenship provides the student with the competencies and
orientations to succeed in a complex, ever-changing technological world. The student
gains mastery in technologies that improve their daily lives, and demonstrate ethical and
legal behavior in the use of technology. Threats to personal safety and to electronic data
are reviewed, and the student defines and practices strategies to protect themselves and to
respect others.
Essential Outcomes: (assessed for mastery)
1. The Student Will summarize and debate the school's acceptable use policy.
2. TSW setup and manage push technology for news acquisition. (e.g. RSS feeds,
Google Alerts, Google Reader)
3. TSW create a real-life digital calendar and maintain it throughout the unit.
4. TSW define plagiarism and copyright, and summarize the relevant aspects of
copyright, intellectual property, trademark, and patent laws, and practice
ethical and legal practices.
5. TSW define ethical and legal behavior regarding inappropriate Web sites, cyber
bullying, cell phone harassment, and sexting.
6. TSW summarize threats to personal safety via technology, including messaging,
sexting, stalking & interaction with strangers, and implications of emerging
technology, (e.g. devices with GPS), and practice safe technology use.
7. TSW inventory their "digital footprint", and identify and discuss the risks and
benefits of social networking and collaborative publishing.
Introduced & Practiced:
1. The Student Will review terminology including emerging technologies.
2. TSW will demonstrate best practices for accounts and passwords.
3. TSW demonstrate ergonomically safe use of equipment.
4. TSW recognize addictive behaviors associated with technology, including online
gaming and substance abuse.
5. TSW recognize phishing and scams regardless of media or device.
6. TSW describe best practices for protecting financial and personal data using online
money management and shopping.
7. TWS demonstrate meta-cognition (learning to learn).

Suggested Materials:
QSI, at this time, has elected to use the i-Safe curriculum as an integral part of teaching
digital citizenship. Recommendations to use this site might change if another site is
deemed more appropriate in the future. It is available for all students. It is strongly
recommended that teachers become familiar with the curriculum, and take the self-study
course before attempting to teach this unit.
