Treasurer Diane Kelly
has announced her resignation from the Board.
Kelly was first elected
to the Board in April, 2010. She
has served in various capacities,
including Vice President from
2013-2015 and as Treasurer since
May, 2015.
In her resignation statement
to the Board, Ms. Kelly said: After much

thought and consideration, I have decided
to resign my position
on the Kohler School
Board. I have not arrived
at this decision easily;
however, it feels like the right
thing to do at this time.
The last 6 years have been rewarding and productive. We have
accomplished good things for our

Kohler Police Athletic League donates $5,000 to

Childrens Hospital
The Kohler Police Athletic
League (KPAL) in conjunction
with the Sheboygan Falls Lions
Club recently donated $5,000.00
to the Childrens Hospital from
our Oktoberfest Fund raiser.
At the January meeting they
also approved the purchase of an
AED unit for the Memorial Theatre, which was brought to their
attention by Brett Edgerle, Public
Works Director, who indicated
that there was not one in the theatre. Due to the use of the theatre
by numerous groups, Edgerle felt
it was important to have an AED
unit available for use if needed.

KPAL continues to support
youth activities and is very close
to completing a permanent scholarship fund for two Kohler High
School seniors every year for
years to come. The organization
has been averaging approximately
$13,000 per year in donations to

Village Activities.
KPAL appreciates all the support received from everyone
in support of their fundraising
events, the main two being their
Brat Fry (coming up on February
21) and their KPAL/Lions Okto-
berfest each fall.

members to help continue their
programs.

posted meeting notices and minutes
A new law was recently enacted
by the state that allows municipalities to post meeting notices in one
physical public place as well as
municipalitys website, instead of
posting the notices in three places, which was previously the state
law. Village of Kohler meeting
notices and approved minutes will
now only be posted at the Village
Hall and on the Villages website at

www.kohlervillage.org. Notices
will no longer be posted at the
Memorial Building or Qmart.

Local housing market sees improvement

Growth Management Educator
Not surprisingly, in the wake
of an improving economy there
has been an overall upward trend
in the Village of Kohler housing
market over at least the last four
years. While not a strictly linear
progression, the number of housing units sold each year since 2012
has risen, the average sold price
has increased, and the amount of
time needed to sell a property has
dropped.
In comparison to other municipalities in the County in 2015,
Kohler had the second highest rate
of housing ownership turnover at
4.8%, trailing only the Village of
Elkhart Lake. The average sold
price was also among the highest (the Town of Rhine was tops).
Nevertheless, despite the higher
than average number of residential units on the market in the Village, selling for more than the average price, the number of days on
the market was only slightly more
than the 118 day average for the
County as a whole.
Data alone, however, doesnt
always tell the whole story. Renee Suscha, Broker Manager at
Village Realty & Development,

(MLS) without offers, Id say we
are heading into a sellers market
this spring. We dont have any
homes available in the $236,000
- $304,000 price range, which is
what many buyers are looking for.
Unfortunately, not all market segments are feeling the real estate
upswing. Luxury homes are still
moving slow in Kohler. Only four
homes have sold in the MLS between $650,000 - $840,000 since
January 1, 2012.
According to statistics from
the Wisconsin Realtors Association, the number of homes sold
in Sheboygan County in 2015 increased by 2.5 percent over 2014
and was the most since at least the
beginning of the Great Recession
in 2007. The average sale price
for 2015 of $125,000 was up 4.2
percent from 2014. That said, the
rate of sales and the average sale
price in the County still trailed the
pace set state-wide, where sales
rose 11.4 percent and the average
sale price increased 5.1 percent to
$155,500.

would say these are major accomplishments.
There is still much to do and
I am certain that the new board
members will be successful.
Building a new strategic plan with
new parent involvement is a lot of
work, but very exciting. I am sure

plan that will result in a strong future for the District.

The Kohler School Board is accepting applications to fill the vacancy resulting from Diane Kellys recent resignation. Interested
candidates must submit a letter of
interest and resume to Paula Anderson, Assistant to the Superintendent, by 4:00 pm on February

As governed by District policy, the Board will conduct candidate interviews during an open
meeting to be held March 14. The

Life Scout Keith Baka of Troop 831 recently completed his advancement project for the
Eagle Scout rank in the Village of Kohler. Keith
planned and led the construction by his fellow
Scouts of 12 bat houses that were installed on
trees throughout Kohler. The primary benefit
of encouraging bat populations is that they
consume a large of amount of insects as food,
especially mosquitoes. It is estimated that with
the 12 newly installed houses, the resident bats
will reduce the number of mosquitoes by almost
2 million each summer evening. A secondary
benefit is that this is accomplished without the
need of insecticides or other methods harmful to
the environment.
Each year it is estimated that Boy Scouts contribute more than 3 million hours of community
service directly by way of Eagle Scout projects.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to
prepare young people to make ethical and moral
choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them

hold its 9th Annual Chess Tournament at Kohler School on Saturday, February 13.
The format for this Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation
Event will be K3, K6 and K12
divisions; five-round Swiss G30.
(WSCF membership is not required).

New Part-time Officer
The Kohler Police Department hired a new part-time officer.
Kevin Post started in mid-November and currently is in
training. Kevin is originally from Fond du Lac and has
attended Fox Valley Technical College and soon will be
completing his bachelors degree from the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Once his training is completed he will
be utilized on patrol just like the full-time officers. If you see
Kevin out and about, please welcome him to the Village.
Year-End Report
Every year the Kohler Police Department submits a year-end
report to the Village Board. That report is open to all to read
too. We post that report on our website. Take a look and see
what we have been doing for the past year. It has statistics
on number of calls and types of calls, as well as identifying
some of the special events that we participate in and can be

Vacation Checks
Dont forget that if you are planning to go away on spring
break or at any time during the year, that you may have
the Kohler Police Department check your house while you
are gone. Residents can now request a vacation check online through the Kohler Police Departments web page, by
stopping by the department or calling. If you call outside
of regular business hours you may leave a message too. In
your message just include your name, address, duration of
your vacation and any other pertinent information that we
may need to know. Some pertinent information may include
lights that are on timers, alarms, and names of persons that

The Village of Kohler is a wonderful community and we
all made a choice to live here to enjoy everything it has to
offer. Parks, tree lined streetscapes, unique neighborhoods
are just a part of the endearing aspect of our planned
community. There is also a sense of pride and ownership.

As winter wanes and spring projects go from planning
to execution, please consider making minor repairs and
maintenance to your home. I encourage you to take a fresh
look at your home and consider tuck pointing masonry, paint
exposed wood, and replace broken windows. These activities
will maintain or increase value of your homes.
As a reminder, Village Ordinances require that all buildings
have a weather resistant, uniform, and neighborhood
compatible exterior finish. Examples of this are wellmaintained natural materials such as stucco, brick and stone;
painted and stained wood in good condition; and non-faded
aluminum, vinyl or cementitious siding.

Snow Emergency
To determine if a snow emergency is in effect for the Village

www.kohlervillage.org. There is no parking on village streets
during a snow emergency. A snow emergency is called

Snow Removal
Winter is upon us. Here are some reminders on Village snow
removal ordinances and policies:
It is the residents responsibility to have the snow
removed around the mail kiosks. The Postal Service
will not deliver mail if the carrier is not able to reach the
kiosk the front as well as the backside. Someone in
the neighborhood needs to take the initiative to remove
the snow or perhaps the responsibility can be shared
amongst neighbors.
Please remember to shovel your sidewalks within 24
hours after a snowfall event.
Do not blow or shovel snow back into the street.
Please remove vehicles from the street when the plows
are in operation.
Please do not put garbage cans in the street when it is
snowing and plows are in operation.
Building Permits
As a reminder, Building Permits are required for all
residential projects involving construction, heating, plumbing
and electrical work that has a value greater than $1,000.00.

other exterior modifications need Kohler Co. and Village of

President Obama signed into law the bill to
reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary
Education Act of 1965, known as the
Every Student Succeeds Act, replacing the
No Child Left Behind Act in place for 14
years. The law reaffirms the importance
of local governance, protects federal
investments for Title I for disadvantaged
students, and prevents the diversion of
public tax dollars for private use. The
law has support from school leaders and

educational agencies around the nation.
The Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction, school administrators, and
teachers have and will continue to serves
its purpose by setting high standards,
being accountable, and delivering on its
promises.

Our PBIS Game Day on December 1st was
a huge success! The students had a great
time. Games, play dough, and coloring
were a big hit with all grades 4k- Grade 5.
We received snack donations from parents,
and the children were able to create their
own snack mix!
Our PBIS focus this month is on listening
and following directions the first time you
are told.
Our second graders had their annual
Gingerbread day, which was great fun!
Parents and students worked together to
create them. They were adorable!
The Holiday concert is this Friday at
2:00. The doors will open at 1:00.

The theme of the high school and middle
school over the past month has clearly
been celebrating successes.
High School Teacher updates:
Dana Krejcarek, Science Department, has
been named a Top Ten 2015 Claes Nobel
Educators of the year by the National Honor
Society of High School Scholars. This
award has been established to encourage
and recognize outstanding teachers for
their dedication, passion, and commitment
to improving the lives of young people
through education
Kyle McGilligan-Benton, English
Department, has been awarded an $800
scholarship grant as part of the UWMadison Great World Text program. It is a
program that connects our students with
the UW-Madison humanities department
and has our students network with other

high school students and professors to
engage in critical discussion of a text.
Both of these educators are proud of their
achievements but even more proud of the
recognition it brings to our school learning
community. We are very honored to have
both of these teachers representing our

Braiden Fitzpatrick wins Kohler Schools National Geography Bee

On January 11, Kohler seventh grader Braiden Fitzpatrick
moves one step closer to winning
a $50,000 college scholarship after competing in the school level
of the National Geography Bee.
Braiden competed against eight
other contestants two from each
grade level in fourth thru eighth
grade. The school-level Bee, at
which students answered oral and
written questions on geography,
was the first round in the 25th
annual National Geography Bee,
which is sponsored by Google..
The kick-off for this years Bee
was the week of November 9,
with thousands of schools around
the US, District of Columbia, and
five U.S. territories participating.
The school winners, including
Braiden, will now take a written
test; up to 100 of the top scorers
in each state and territory will be
eligible to compete in their state
Bee on April 1, 2016.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C.,
for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the
national championship rounds on
May 22-25, 2016. The first-place

national winner will receive a
$25,000 college scholarship, a
lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos
Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.
The national finals will air on
television on the National Geographic Channel and PBS stations. Check local listings for
dates and times.

Kohler Schools using technology-enhanced Kohler

classroom: The Distance Learning Center grant from

The classroom today has
changed immensely from the
days of card catalogs, handwritten assignments and chalkboards.
There is an increased need for
even a small school like Kohler
to connect to the outside world on
a regular basis through technology. However, a decrease in public school funding has limited the
Districts ability to provide much
needed resources. In turn, The
Kohler School Foundation has
stepped in on a number of occasions to fund technology advances
in our school system using monies
raised through our community.
The Kohler School District has
adeptly utilized these resources
for the direct advantage of our
students. The Distance Learning
Center is one such tremendous
asset. Equipped with technology
that connects a classroom of students to locations worldwide, it
is used by teachers at every grade
level. In addition, the room is a
permanent classroom for the technology teacher, Mr. Curt Coenen.
Mr. Coenen consistently uses
the Distance Learning Center to
teach the latest trends in technology. Just three years ago,
Kohler students had to pair up to
do projects on a shared computer
and needed to physically locate a

teacher to talk to them about an
assignment. Today, each student
at Kohler School District has a
district email address via Google, which allows them to work
collaboratively and efficiently
connect with other students and
teachers. Sixth grade students
entering middle school are taught
the basics of Google email, documents, presentations, spreadsheets, sites, forms, and more. By
conducting the technology classes
in the Distance Learning Center,
students learn to function in a
professional atmosphere, access
updated equipment, work together and, when relevant, collaborate
worldwide. The state-of-the-art
room mirrors a facility one would
find in a professional setting.
Kohler Schools also recognizes the critical importance of
teaching todays students how to
present their work. The Distance
Learning Center facilitates this
skill with monitors in the back
of the room that work essentially
as teleprompters for a more fluid
public speaking style. While our
students are learning how to make
PowerPoint presentations in third
grade, one of the biggest fears of
students continues to be talking in
front of people, especially their
peers. These kids LOVE being in
control of the room when presenting, says Mr. Coenen. We see a

lot of confidence built as a direct
result of the technology.
The Distance Learning Center
actually serves many purposes.
For example, a recent Business
Management class utilized the
live video conferencing feature
to have a real time presenter from
Germany speak to the students
about management in the United States versus management
tactics in Germany. The kids
were blown away by the use of
this technology, related Coenen,
This is much more than a simple
Skype connection. Because there
are microphones at each desk,
the students can talk in a normal
voice, instead of shouting. Additionally, the direct contact with a
German businessman brings more
credibility to the classroom discussion. Similarly, elementary
teachers regularly connect with
the Milwaukee Public Museum
where they receive lessons from
the museum representative or curator.
Beyond the Distance Learning
Center, technology has been integrated throughout the school.
A substantial grant from the
Kohler School Foundation provided interactive whiteboards,
known as SMART Boards, in
every classroom. A new generation of chalkboard, these highly advanced screens access the
Internet, use touch software and
engage students in new and effective ways. Business Education
teacher, Jodi Grossen, uses the
SMART Board to engage students
in higher level thinking skills
when reviewing curriculum by
using interactive Venn Diagrams
and Continuums. The high school
students love to come up to the
front of the room and manipulate information on the SMART
Board. At the youngest grades,
elementary students are able, with
a touch of their fingers, to direct
information, complete math problems and conduct surveys.
Superintendent Quynh Trueblood offers the more specialized
perspective that students who
are visual learners thrive in environments that stimulate their
minds from graphics, codes, and
non-written language schemas
and are apt to understand more
when solutions are visually modeled in front of them. It is with
these students in mind that Kohler
Schools continues to exceed expectations by seeking to provide
more technology-based opportunities taking place in the Distance
Learning Center.

Program
Lori Gregoire, manager of Petro Center #5 at 3801 Superior
Avenue, Sheboygan worked with
Jessie Good, high school science
teacher at Kohler, to secure a $500
grant made available by ExxonMobil to schools across the country.
As an Exxon Mobil retailer,
the Petro Center is proud to help
provide extra funding to make it
possible to provide current technology equipment for students.
Ms. Good plans to use the grant
money to intensify the learning of
her students in the area of Science
Technology.
Exxon Mobil believes that, as
members of the community, retailers are best qualified to work with
local educators to identify schools
that could use extra funds to
make learning more intriguing
for the students. Petro Center #5
had to meet certain criteria before
applying for the grant. Kohler
School alumni Peter and Kristin
Guske, owners of Petro Center,
strive to provide great customer
service, with competitive pricing.
This is their way of giving back to
the community that has given to
them.
Music Notes
Big East Conference Honors Band
and Choir
On Thursday, January 7, 2016, fourteen
members of the Kohler Symphony
Band and Concert Choir rehearsed and
performed a concert as members of the
Big East Conference Honors Band and
Choir at the Manitowoc Capitol Civic
Centre. This years guest conductors
included was Dr. Jack Stamp and Susan
McAllister. Congratulations to all the
Kohler musicians.
WMSA Solo & Ensemble Festival at

Kohler Public Schools
Parents are encouraged to come and
support the Kohler music students at
the WSMA District Solo & Ensemble
Music Festival hosted by Kohler Public
Schools on Saturday, February 27.
Kohler students, along with students
from Howards Grove, Elkhart Lake and
Sheboygan Lutheran will be performing
a wide variety of performances for the
public. Performance times will also be
posted on the music department website as
soon as they arrive.
All performances are free and open to
the public.
Keeping with Kohler tradition, the
music department has prepared nearly 200

performing events most in the Central
Lakeshore Conference. Good luck to all
