Cell Cycle Notes Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Teacher:Julie Koshy

Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: Jan.19, 2016

Standard:
S4.PO 1. Describe the role of energy in cellular growth, development, and repair.
S4.PO 5. Describe the purposes and processes of cellular reproduction.
Objective (SWBAT):
Describe the stages of the cell cycle
Explain the differences and similarities between each stage
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
List the stages of the cell cycle in correct sequence
Describe the changes in the cell between stages
Describe the differences and similarities between the stages
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable, include variety of methods of checking for understanding):
Students will sequence and describe the stages of the cell cycle by labeling a diagram and
matching the stages with the descriptions.
Key vocabulary: growth 1 phase, synthesis phase,
growth 2 phase, and mitosis

Materials: PowerPoint, animation, students

lab notebooks, and writing utensil

Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
Ask students what do people do from the time they are born until they die? They grow, make things,
and die.

Teacher Will:
Play animation, pausing periodically to
clarify and explain the animation.

Student Will:
Take notes in their lab notebook.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing can be given the slides with the key points left blank for
the students to fill in. Also students who are unable to write may use a computer to type their
notes.
Student Will:
Take notes based on the animation and
answer any questions posed by the teacher.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing notes can be given a fill in the blank worksheet to go
along with the animation.

Teacher Will:
Provide students with a diagram for them
to fill in.

Student Will:
Fill in diagram with relevant information
about the cell cycle.

Differentiation
Students who have trouble sequencing can have access to the animation.

Closure/Lesson Summary: Each cell had a life span just like each person does. All cells however follow
the same sequence and path of their lifespan, which is described in the cell cycle. Knowing about the
cell cycle allows scientists to use that information to try to combat illnesses like cancer.
