Running Head: TUMOR CONFERENCE: SOFT TISSUE SARCOMA

On Wednesday, January 20, I attended the Tumor Conference at

the Baton Rouge General hospital. The most interesting case that was
presented today was a 51 year old female with Soft tissue sarcoma.
This patients soft tissue sarcoma is a 13 cm x 12 cm mass found
in the post musculature of her left leg and originates in the abductor
magnus without any hamstring involvement.
After an incisional biopsy, the mass was deemed a high grade
sarcoma consistent with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma,
malignant with fibrous histiocytoma. Most of this mass was made of
necrotic tissue. She was then given a bone scan that came back
negative.
It did not seem that amputation of the leg is necessary for this
particular case. Limb sparing surgery has already taken place, and is
now to be planned for external beam radiation therapy to 50 Gray with
treatment all the way to the pubic ramus. Chemotherapy is to be
administered after radiation treatment. The chemotherapy doctor
mentioned Adriamycin, 5 Fluorouracil (5FU), and Phosphamide for 4
cycles in 18 weeks.
It is very common for soft tissue sarcomas to metastasize to the
lungs, so it was discussed that she will undergo chest x rays
intermittently throughout her treatments and after to be able catch it
as soon as possible.
