Setting.

Significance of the opening scene

The story takes place at either Wuthering


Heights of Thrushcross Grange. Wuthering
Heights represents the Romantic Age and
Thrushcross Grange represents the new
Victorian Age. The setting between the two
represents the border between the changes.
Symbols
Dogs represent the loyalty that was never
achieved. Also, when they are hung, it
represents the lost in trust that Heathcliff has.
Ghosts represent how love is eternal, and also
how it can last even in death.
Houses. The Heights represent the Romantic
Age while The Grange represents the Victorian
Age.
Possible themes.
Love will always find a way.
Do not judge people completely based upon
looks.
Revenge is always best served cold.
Making others suffer does not always solve the
problem.

The opening chapter introduces all of the


characters. It gives wonder as to how
Heathcliff gained two properties that were
never destined to be his. It also plays at the
tension between the Romantic and Victorian
Ages.
Significance of the ending/closing scene
Heathcliff and Catherine walk through the
moors in spiritual form. This represents how
love continues through death. The story also
starts over because Catherine (child) becomes
Catherine Linton Heathcliff Earnshaw.
