stillnow,theChewJettyhaswithstoodthetestoftimeandastrongtestamentoflivingheritagefor
Penangandtheworldtomesmerize.
Startedmerelyasawoodenpassagewayandslowlycreatedintoaclusterofhousesperchabovethe
seashoresbystiltsabovetheneverendingshiftingtides,thiscommunalsiteislockedinatimezone
byitself,disregardingtheurbandevelopmentthatistakingplacearoundit.
Penangbeingaheritagetownisrichwithattractivehistoricsitesandculturalevents,butthis
inimitablesettlementstandsoutasatrulyuniquelivingheritage.TheChewJettyisactuallyawhole
settlementofwoodenhousesbuiltonsiltsandthenameChewisthesurname(thefirstname)of
theresidencesandthatswherethenamewasderived.Migrantsfamilieswiththissurnamewould
livetogetherinthisarea.

TheseclustersofwoodenhouseswerebuiltbytheChinesepoorimmigrantswhoworkneartheport
duringthenineteencentury.TheseimmigrantsmigratedfromthesoutheasterncoastofChina,
knownastheFujianProvinceoverhereduetothehardshiptheyfaceintheirhomelandduringthat
era.Latertheybroughttheirfamiliesoverandmadethiswaterfronttheirhome.TheChewJettyis
stillhometohundredsofpeoplelivinginthisareatodaybutmanyhavechangedtheirsocialand
economiclifestyle.

Thejettywasinitiallyrowsofplanksupportedbystiltsconstructedasplatformforpassengers
embarkinganddisembarkingfromtheboatstotheshoresandviceversa.Lateron,theseplatforms
werejoinedtogethertobecomeajetty.Asoftoday,notmanypeopleknowthereasonwhythese
woodenhouseswerebuildonstiltsbythesideofthejetty.Furthermore,housesbuiltonstiltswas
notacommonpracticeintheseimmigrantshomelandbutmoreoftheSouthEastAsiaadaptation.As
morehouseswerebuilt,woodenwalkwaysandalleysbranchoutfromthemainjettytobecomea
clusterofhomefortheseimmigrantsandtheirfamilies.
Thehouseswerebuiltonanadhocbasisandclosetoeachother,withsomeseparatedbyasmall

anddepletedbutsurprisingverycleanandtidyinside.Waterandelectricitywasinstalledforthemin
1954.Youabletofindevenawellstockgrocerystore,andmosthouseshasmodernamenitieslike
airconditions,television,fridgesaproofthatmodernizationcanjuxtaposewithtraditionallifestyle.

ForvisitorstoPenang,thissiteisafascinatingandmustnotbemissedoutintheitinerary.Onestep
ontothewoodenwalkwaysyouwillbeabletofeeltheambiencefromthesurroundingthatexudes

Visitorsshouldcomeandwitnesstheclanreligiousactivitieswhicharecolourfulanddeepwith
traditionalceremonies.ThemostelaborateandgrandcelebrationistheworshipofJadeEmperor
(SkyGod)ontheeightdayoftheChineseNewYear.Everyresidentwouldpreparetheirofferingof
foodbylyingthemjointlyona50meterlongalterbythesideofthemainroad.
Thealterissurroundedbymanyhugedecoratedandcolourfulgiantjosssticks.Thetablesidesare
tiedtogetherwithsugarcaneandredorigamipaperhangingfromthesugarcanestem.Atthestroke
ofmidnightfireworksareletoff,turningthestreetintoamagicalsight.

Touristswhowishtoexperiencethetraditionallifestyleandalaybackholidaycouldoptforahome
stayinthissettlementitself.Theschemewasstartedbyoneoftheresidentsthusenablingyoutoget

andsignificantlycontributingtotherichculturalheritage.
