Unit Description: Challenging Perspectives
During the third quarter, we will participate in a variety of tasks in order to help us deepen our
understandings of the world.
Essential Questions (Montgomery County Public Schools [MCPS]):
Why does my voice matter?
How do I join the conversation?
How does language reflect an understanding of the world?
How do texts inform thinking and change understanding?
How do writers and speakers ensure their voices are heard?
As always, your goal is to become a better listener, reader, speaker, thinker, and writer.
Materials Needed:
A journal or notebook for your daily warm-ups, used only for this class. Journals will stay in
class every day.
I suggest you keep a separate folder for the writing skills worksheets you receive.
Rules:
No cell phones out once the bell rings. I do not even want to see them on your desks!
No headphones out once the bell rings not around your neck, not around your ears, and not
atop your head.
Most importantly, be respectful of your classmates. Everyone will present his/her own opinions
and ideas, and I require that you respond to them respectfully.
Absences & Make-Up Work:
When you are absent, you are responsible for checking the make-up work file for any work you
missed that day. It is your responsibility to pick up the worksheet and complete it by the assigned
date. I will NOT accept late work without an excused absence as recorded by the attendance office. I
will only grade work collected after the due date (without prior accommodations) for partial credit.
