ABSTRACT FOR POSTER PRESENTATION

Spindle Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck Aim and objectives
To describe clinical presentation, histopathology, management and prognosis of spindle
cell carcinoma of Head and Neck region( Larynx and Maxilla).
Methodology
Two case reports and review of literature
Results
A case of 70 year-old male who presented with hoarsenesss since one year and stridor
since 1 week. On Flexible Nasopharyngolaryngoscopy polypoidal, pedunculated mass with
surface ulceration was seen arising from right vocal cord, obstructing the glottic chink and
extending into subglottis. Tracheostomy under local anesthesia was done followed by
videolaryngoscopic guided removal of the pedunculated mass under general anesthesia. The
histopathology suggested SpCC and was given radiotherapy. He was followed up for a period of
six months. During this period his symptoms gradually improved, with no recurrence.
Conclusions
Spindle cell, a subtype and more aggressive variant of commonly occurring Squamous
cell Carcinoma, is unique and rare neoplasm, comprising of 0.6 1.5 % of laryngeal cancers.
Early detection and management yields very good result as prognosis of this variety is good.
