VOCABULARY LIST
Canon when more than one part plays the same musical idea but starting on a
different beat/bar. The result is that the same part is overlapped.
Cell a short musical idea.
Dynamics volume.
Metre the type of time signature; how many beats in a bar.
Modal a tonality that is neither major nor minor.
Modulate to change key.
Monophonic a texture that consists of only one part with no accompaniment.
Note addition the method of adding notes gradually to a cell/ostinato.
Ostinato a short repeated idea.
Panning a studio effect which separates sounds so that they are played out of
different speakers (left and right).
Polyphonic a musical texture featuring numerous independent parts.
Resultant melody a new melody produced when numerous parts each play their
melodies at the same time.
Static harmony no chord sequence; the chord stays the same throughout a
section.
Syncopation off-beat rhythms; notes accented off the beat.
