VOCABULARY LIST
Altered chord a chord in which one of the notes has been altered to a flat or
sharp.
Blue note a flattened third, fifth or seventh.
Changes a jazz term for the chords.
Comping a jazz term for accompanying; it is what the pianist does.
Extended chord a chord with an added note (other than the seventh).
Frontline the solo instruments in a jazz ensemble.
Head the main melody of a jazz piece. The head section is played at the start and
end of a jazz piece.
Homophonic a musical texture made up of chords, or melody and accompaniment.
Improvisation making music up on the spot.
Modal jazz a style of jazz in which the soloists base their solos on modes rather
than normal scales.
Rif a short repeated idea.
Seventh chord a chord with an added seventh.
Swing rhythm a jazz rhythm in which pairs of quavers are uneven: long-short.
Syncopation off-beat rhythms; notes accented off the beat.
Turnaround the last few chords of a chord sequence.
