Analysing graphs

in Media reports

MEDIA REPORTS 1
Graphs are an effective way to display data that has been collected.
They are used in newspapers and magazines to back up reports.
However, graphs have to follow certain rules or the information they show can be
misleading.
We are going to analyse a media report on junk food.

Media Report: Junk Food

WELCOME TO THE HEADROOM NEWSROOM!
THIS WEEK WERE DOING A SPECIAL REPORT
ON JUNK FOOD. WE NEED TO CHECK SOME DATA
WEVE COLLECTED ON WHO EATS JUNK FOOD.

Media Report: Junk Food

Were going to base our report
on this graph.
We interviewed 200 people from each age group,
from ages 10 to 99.
WE ASKED WETHER THEY ATE JUNK FOOD.

GRAPH ACCURACY

GRAPH ACCURACY
If you found OUT that some of the statements are false, then the graph is misleading!
Actually, statements number 3 and 4 are false because the class intervals and the scales
on the axes are not uniform.
Now try to create a new graph where each age group has
a uniform class interval.
Use a google spreadsheet and share your work with your classmates.

GRAPH ACCURACY
This is the correct graph. Now try to create a new headline that matches the data on the graph.
