HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE

HOME = A PLACE TO LEARN
1. Help your child develop a study area.
Set up your-childs study with a desk or table, a good light, pencils, paper, and other
supplies. Make the area off-limits to other family members during study time.
Note: The bed is not a good place for writing, and the floor in front of the TV is a
bad place for any studying.
2. Provide a quiet environment for study.
Keep the house quiet while your child is doing homework. You can read a book,
write letters, or do other quiet activities during this time. A child who is too young
for homework can use this quiet period for creative play. A quiet home helps your
child concentrate and says that we are a family of learners.
3. Set a regular time for studying.
To help your child make homework a habit, schedule studying for the same time
each day. Even when your child has no homework, she can use her study time for
school-related activities.
Note: Ask your childrens teachers how much time your children should spend on
homework. Times vary for different ages and abilities.
4. Help your child develop a homework To Do list.
He will more organized if he writes down assignments as the teacher gives them
and checks them off when he finishes them.
5. Limit your childs TV time.
Having the TV on all the time makes it harder for children to buckle-down and get
to work. Consider allowing your child to watch one hour of TV on weeknights and
more, if desired, on weekends. So listen to what your own parents told you, and
turn off that TV once in a while.
6. Help your child make learning a part of everyday life.
Making learning fun will motivate your child to learn ever faster. Try teaching your
child how to follow a favorite recipe. Ask her opinion in family conversations, practice telling stories to each other, and help her start hobbies such as collecting. All
these activities build learning skills.
