INTRODUCTION:
Once upon a time there lived a boy named Andres. He wanted to marry
the daughter of the mayor of Digos City. But Andres was very poor. He did not earn
enough money from selling firewood. He did not even have enough money for food
and clothing.
One day Andres went to the forest. He decided to gather plenty of
firewood so he would be able to get more money. So he looked for the biggest tree
in the forest.

Andres: Aha! This tree is so big it will surely give me a lot of firewood.
Tree: Pray, kind sir, dont cut me down.
Andres: Do I hear someone talking? (looks around) It must be the wind. Id better
cut down this tree.
Tree: Pray, kind sir, dont cut me down.
Andres (surprised): My! I must be dreaming. Do you really talk?
Tree: Yes, kind sir. I beg of you, dont cut me down. I will give you a magic pot.
Andres: What can the magic pot do?
Tree: It can give you anything you wish for.
Andres: Very well, Ill take the magic pot.
Andres got the magic pot and went home. On the way he met Kemil, his
friend.

Kemil: What do you have with you, Andres?

Andres: A magic pot.
Kemil: A magic pot? You must be joking.

Andres: But this is really a magic pot.

Kemil: It looks ordinary to me. But if you say its magic, well, I must believe you.
Come, let me give you a
drink.
(The two go to Kemils house. They begin drinking.)
Kemil: Tell me, how does your magic pot work?
Andres: You want to find out? Let me show you how.(puts the pot on the table)
Magic pot, magic pot,
give us plenty of food.(food appears on the table) See?
Kemil: Wonderful! Lets have some more drink. (Andres drinks until he gets drunk
and falls asleep.)
Kemil: Silly kid! Ill change this magic pot with an ordinary pot. He will never know I
have this with me.
(changes the magic pot with an ordinary pot) Now, Ill awaken him. (shakes
Andres) Andres, its
getting late. Youd better be going.
Andres (awakens, feeling dizzy): Oh, my! I fell asleep. (gets his magic pot) Thanks
for the drink, Kemil.
Kemil: Thats nothing.
Andres hurried home. His mother and father were waiting for him.
Andres: Look, Mother. Look, Father. Ive got a magic pot.
Mother: Really?
Andres: Look! Magic pot, magic pot, give me plenty of food.
Mother: Where is the food?
Andres: But
Father: Stop fooling us, Andres. You, liar!

Mother: Dont ever try to tell us lies again.

The following day Andres went to the forest again. He looked for the
tree which he thought had made a fool out of him.
Andres: Im going to cut down this tree.
Tree: Pray, sir, dont cut me down. Ill give you a magic net.

Andres: Magic net? What can it do? Dont fool me.

Tree: You just spread the net and it will catch many fish.
Andres: Let me try it first. If you are only fooling me, Ill cut you down. (gets the
net and spreads it) Gee!
It catches plenty of fish indeed. (folds the net) Thank you, kind tree.
(leaves)
Andres went home. On his way, he met Kemil.
Kemil: Ola, Andres. Lets have a drink.
Andres: Thanks, Im really thirsty.
Kemil (hands a glass of wine to Andres, and notices the net): Hey, dont tell me
youre a fisherman now.
Andres: Truth is, this is no ordinary net.
Kemil: Really? I cant see why its not ordinary.
Andres (spreads the net): See? I can catch plenty of fish without going to the river.
Kemil: Marvelous! (to himself) I must have that net. (aloud) Here, have some more
wine.
(Andres drinks until he gets drunk and fall asleep.)
Kemil (changes the magic net with an ordinary net): What a fool you are, Andres.
Andres (awakens): Oh, Id better be going. (gets the magic net) Thanks for the
drinks, Kemil.
Kemil: Thats nothing.
Andres went home. As usual, his father and mother were waiting for him.
Andres: Look, Mother, Father, I have a magic net.
Mother: Magic net?

Andres: Yes. You only spread the net and, presto! You have plenty of fish. (spreads
the net)
Mother: Wheres the fish? I cant see even one.
Father: You are talking nonsense.
Andres: But
Father: Enough of your lies!
The following day Andres returned to the forest. He tried to cut down the
tree.
Tree: Pray, kind sir, dont cut me down. Ill give you a magic cane.

Andres: Magic cane! You always talk of magic things which are not really magic at
all.
Tree: But, kind sir, I really gave you a magic pot and a magic net.
Andres: Dont fool me.
Tree: Please believe me, sir.
Andres: What can this magic cane do for me?
Tree: It can beat your enemy.
Andres: All right, Ill take this cane, but if it doesnt work, Ill come back to cut you
down.
Tree: Yes. If it doesnt work. Ill not ask you to spare my life.

Andres got the magic cane and went home. He met Kemil.
Kemil: Ah, Andres, it is nice to see you. (notices the cane) Thats a nice cane youve
got.
Andres: Fact is, it is a magic cane.
Kemil: Really? Lets have a drink. Then, you can tell me how it works.
Andres: Very well.
Kemil: Here, drink this wine. Now, show me how your magic cane works.
Andres: Magic cane, beat him who stole my magic pot and my magic net.

(The cane begins beating Kemil. It runs after Kemil and continues
beating him.)
Kemil: Ouch! Help me, Andres. Stop your magic cane.
Andres: Fetch first the magic pot and the magic net.
Kemil: Yes, yes. Ill do that. (runs to fetch the and the net) Here they are. Tell your
cane to stop.
Andres: Thats enough, magic cane. Good-bye, Kemil.
Andres went home. You can be sure that he became very rich. He was
able to marry the daughter of the mayor and they lived happily ever after.
