Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Goal Comparison

In order to assure that a students IEP goal is focused on making progress on the
Common Core State Standards, teachers must compare their goals to the common core. Planning,
progress monitoring, data-based decision making, direct instruction, goal setting and assessment
support the student in making appropriate progress toward both their individual goals and
standards. A students IEP will be compared with a Common Core State Standard and
instructional planning will be presented to support the students progress.
Students IEP Goal
Actual
Student will when given a prompt for a narrative, informative and/or argumentative
writing assignment, use a graphic organizer to help her develop a claim/thesis, cite evidence
from a text and develop supportive so what? sentences in order to write a 1 to 3 paragraph
essay at least once per quarter as noted by teacher records.
SMART
Student will write a one-paragraph essay with an introduction, three supporting details
and a conclusion sentence with 98% accuracy on 3 out of 4 trials over a 12-week period.
Reflection on IEP Goal
Specific
The goal states that the student will write one paragraph with an introduction, three
supporting details and a conclusion sentence. This goal is specifically focusing on the content
that needs to be present in a paragraph.
Measurable

IEP GOAL COMPARISON

The student will need to complete the goal with 98% accuracy on 3 out of 4 trials because
all components need to be present in order for the student to accurately get their claim or topic
sentence with sufficient information to back themselves up. It could be argued that students need
to complete this in more trials as to show their competence with a skill that is a building block in
writing.
Attainable
The students abilities are appropriate for this goal. The student is capable of meeting the
goal without help from adults other than direct instruction and practice.
Relevant
The skill needed for writing a one-paragraph essay can be used in all other subjects
within the school environment. It is appropriate for the student to spend sufficient time on this
skill especially in multiple contexts and subjects.
Time Bound
This goal is set for one year during the time the IEP is implemented. Instead you could
write it for a more specific time frame. Such as, By December 2016 or over a nine week
period or by another specific date. Although the goal is time bound, it may take less than a year
to accomplish.
Instructional Planning
Instructional Plan to Meet the Goal
In order to meet this goal I would teach the student a strategy that they can use to self
regulate. The TREE strategy helps students remember the parts of a paragraph.

E-Ending/Examples
E-Ending/Examine
First, I would teach the strategy and have the student memorize the mnemonic. Then, I
would give examples through modeling and guided practice. Finally, I will scaffold support for
the student to meet her goal of writing the one paragraph essay.
Student Meeting the Goal
The student can use the TREE strategy to write the paragraph and include the appropriate
components required to meet her goal. The TREE strategy can also be used in their other classes
in order to provide support and practice in multiple contexts.
Measuring the Goal
The student will be administered verbal and written quizzes on the specific parts of
TREE. Informal observation and support during instruction will be provided. Finally, weekly
progress monitoring will be conducted giving the student a prompt, five minutes of
think/planning time and then 15 minutes of writing time to complete paragraph.
IEP Goal and Common Core Standard Connection
Common core standard. 8th Grade Language Arts Writing Standard 2: Write
informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information
through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
Connection to core. Core standard includes writing an introduction, supporting details
and a conclusion in a structured formatting. By using TREE, the student can organize their
thoughts and ideas. They will also have all the required elements for both the IEP goal and
Common Core State Standard
Specific Accommodations

The student will be given a graphic organizer to help them organizer their thoughts. The teacher
will then slowly scaffold it down so that the graphic organizer does not contain the specific parts
of the paragraph and instead only a spot to put them in.
