oftheworld.TheabilityofSRTMtopenetratecloudsandmakethreedimensionalmeasurementshasallowedthegenerationof
thefirstcompletehighresolutiontopographicmapoftheentireregion.Thismapwasusedtogeneratetheimage.
Twovisualizationmethodswerecombinedtoproducetheimage:shadingandcolorcodingoftopographicheight.Theshade
imagewasderivedbycomputingtopographicslopeinthenorthsouthdirection.Colorcodingisdirectlyrelatedtotopographic
height,withgreenatthelowerelevations,risingthroughyellow,red,andmagenta,towhiteatthehighestelevations.

ElevationdatausedinthisimagewereacquiredbytheShuttleRadarTopographyMissionaboardtheSpaceShuttleEndeavour,
launchedonFebruary11,2000.ThemissionusedthesameradarinstrumentthatcomprisedtheSpaceborneImagingRadar
C/XBandSyntheticApertureRadarthatflewtwiceontheSpaceShuttleEndeavourin1994.TheShuttleRadarTopography
MissionwasdesignedtocollectthreedimensionalmeasurementsoftheEarth'ssurface.Tocollectthe3Ddata,engineers
addeda60meter(200foot)longmast,installedadditionalCbandandXbandantennas,andimprovedtrackingandnavigation
devices.ThemissionisacooperativeprojectbetweenNASA,theNationalImageryandMappingAgencyoftheU.S.Department
