Chapter 4B Gender Equality

FHS 2400 period_3
Gender Equality: Does it seem to you like gender equality is a one-way street? When we talk
about gender equality, arent we usually talking about women becoming more like men? Why
dont conversations about gender equality also focus on mens ability to become more like
women? Does our society believe that women can really lead as well as a man? Does our
society really believe that a man can be as nurturing as a woman? What do you believe? The
double standard of aging says that men become more distinguished as they get older and that
women dont. Assuming that you view this double standard as being unfair, what can you do
and what should our society do to remedy this lack of equality?

Most people believe in gender equality, but they tend to use this term when referring to
womens rights. This raises the question; what about men? Dont they deserve equality too?
Most of society supports women taking on masculine roles such as, providing, having a career,
and being intelligent. The double standard is that lots of people judge men when they take on
more feminine roles. When men stay home and take care of the kids or they cook or want to
wear pink, people say that they are being to girly or that they need to man up. NOMAS is a
national organization that supports males in these equality issues. They encourage mens rights
and child custody (Strong & Cohen, 2014, p.142).
In my AP Lang class Im writing an essay on Title ix and its effect on men and its
inequality. The law basically has been changed to the point that it has gone from promoting
equality to promoting feminism and women over men. People tend to overlook it more when
men are affected negatively by sexism because they are so used to men having power and being
the dominant gender. I think that society needs to help solve this problem first by becoming
aware of the issue. So many people dont even realize that its happening and that first step

would help make a change for the better. We should amend laws like Title ix so that they
promote equality for both genders.
