Synecdoche

Definition: a poetic device in which a


part of something represents the whole or
it may use a whole to represent a part.
Examples:
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survived, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them.
The hand refers to the sculptor who carved the lifeless things into a statue.
His eyes met hers as she sat there paler and whiter than anyone in the vast ocean
of anxious faces around her.
Faces refers to people.
