Procedure
1) Explore the word masterpiece. Students will share out with shoulder
partner first, and then teacher will call on students to share out their ideas for
the meaning of the word.
2) Google: masterpiece and view what the official definition is.
3) Share that artists work during their careers and might do a very special piece
that is considered their masterpiece. Have you heard Mrs. Bailey, the art
specialist, when shes shown you a picture or told you about an artist who
has a masterpiece? Have some students share about one. (example:
Starry Night by VanGogh, may look up this art piece for students)
4) Introduce the book and title and refer to the VBO I can statement on the
front board.
5) Ask what they think the story will be about. (clues = young girl in flowing
dress who looks happy and like shes dancing, title words)
6) Students come to carpet while teacher reads book under Lumens light.
7) Stop to talk about character traits (card listing traits available and each child
has this card in their Writing Notebook), setting (When? Where?), and the
flow of events. When a problem arises in the story, note it or ask students if
they have noted a problem. Refer to the story map organizer and the wall
chart by the computers on the parts of a story.
8) After reading, students stretch and return to their desks to fill in the story
map organizer as modeled by teacher under Lumens.
9) Teacher models and students copy.
10)
Some students at the back of room may come to the front to use the
computer stands as desktops.
