Introduction

The purpose of this practice test is to prepare students for the Otis-Lennon School
Ability Test (OLSAT) so that they will be familiar with the different types of questions
that will appear on the test. With the help of this practice test, students will learn to
follow a row across the page from left to right, to mark their answers properly, and to
change their answers if necessary. Understanding what to expect on the test will
improve your childs chances of success as well as help reduce his/her anxiety on test
day.
The OLSAT contains 60 questions (30 verbal and 30 nonverbal), and children are
allotted approximately one hour to complete the test. The sample test below contains
10 practice questions for the OLSAT Level A.

Directions
Read the questions below to your child. If you make a mistake in reading a question,
stop, and say, No that is wrong. Listen again.
Children should be allotted approximately one minute to answer the question after it
has been read. As this test is not scored, we recommend that students receive as
much assistance as necessary to correctly solve the questions.

Answers & Explanations

1. 1; The chef has rolled pizza dough, spread tomato sauce, and placed toppings on the
pizza. In order to make pizza, the chef also needs to place the pizza in the oven.
2. 4; Option four shows one duck sitting on a boat during the day.
3. 3; Option three shows one car pointing in the right direction and one car pointing in the
left direction.
4. 4; All of the items above can be worn on one's head, except for the umbrella.
5. 1; A sweater is worn in cold, rainy weather like a bathing suit is worn in sunny
weather.
6. 1; The pattern above contains alternating carrots and rabbits. The pattern is: carrot,
rabbit, carrot, rabbit, and so on. Since the last picture in the series is a rabbit, the
answer choice will be a picture of a carrot.
7. 3; A toothbrush is used to apply toothpaste like a knife is used to apply jam.
8. 4; If all of the arrows were pointing upwards, the shading of the arrow would be on the
left side. The shading of the arrow in option four is on the right side.
9. 2; All of the other options have pairs of the same shapes directly across from one
another. Option two contains a pair of shapes that are not alike (a diamond and a
circle).
10. 3; Each square in the top row contains a circle divided into four equal segments. Both
circles are identical to each other, except that the colors of the segments are inversed.
The segments that were purple on the left become green on the right and vice versa.
The shapes in the bottom row will follow the same pattern. The answer choice will
contain an identical figure with opposite coloring.
