Progress in English Grammar is a series of three books which give students practice in English grammar. Book 1 is for beginners, You can use it in the classroom, for homework or for self-study. Progress in English Grammar is designed to supplement your course book. The order of the sections follows the most common order of grammar presentation in major course books. However, you may not want to work straight through the book. You may want to practise only some sections, or you may want to study them in a different order from the way the book is laid out. The Contents list at the front and the Index at the back will help you to find specific grammar points. Each of the sections has a short presentation box to remind | you of a particular grammar point. This is followed by graded exercises which begin by helping you to recognise the item of grammar and to practise it on its own. Then there are exercises practising the item in other forms or with other items. For example, you will practise the present continuous tense first in the positive, then in the negative, then in question forms. Then all forms are practised together, and finally the tense is contrasted with the present simple. in this way both the form and the meaning of each grammar point become familiar in easy steps. At the end of the book there is a series of exercises covering areas of grammar where you may need extra practice. This section {s called Mixed Practice. The grammar items in each exercise are given at the top of each page. L For the teacher there are answer keys and progress tests available separately. 10 1 The alphabet 6 Indefinite articles: a/an 7 Singular and plural nouns 9 Regular and irregular plurals 10 Subject pronouns n Present simple of to be with subject pronouns 12 positive and negative 13 questions and short answers 14 all forms 15 Question words who, what, where with present simple of tobe 16 Possessive adjectives W with subject pronouns 18 Genitive apostrophe s 19 Demonstrative pronouns this/that/these/those 20 Prepositions of place in, on, under, next to 21 have got positive 2 negative 23 questions and short answers 24 all forms with and and but for personal descriptions with some and ony 12 Plural genitive s apostrophe 13.
