- Remind everyone to hand in registration forms
before CNY break.
- Remind the J01s to confirm their TTC attendance
asap.
- Tell them to follow their groups from last week.
- Tell them which class theyll be using.

Topics to cover:
1) Left handed shake
- The 2 stories of how this came about.
- The meaning behind it, like why is this better than the
usual right handed shake.

2) Scout Mottos
- The mottos of PKK, PM, PR, PK, in both BM and Eng.

- Tell them the Scout oath, as well as when do we use it
and why should every Scout memorize it.

- How should they sew their badges? Where should they
sew their badges? What are the badges to be sewn?
- Emphasize that they dont have to buy keahlian badge
as itll be awarded when they pass their tests.
- Why do we wear another shirt under our uniforms? (To
prevent sweat stains on our shirt, for easier removal
when we wanna do pioneering/backwoods etc)
- Difference between bronze and silver belt, as well as
why we wear canvas shoes instead of leather shoes.

J03s Maps and Orienteering


Main points to cover:
a) Silva compass - Briefly on how it differs from
other compasses, as well as why is it a better
option.
b) What is the contour system? How to read them
to understand the map? (Use the printed diagrams
to show them)
c) Finding a location based on grids.
d) Identifying the distance between different
locations by calculating the scale.
e) The 3 types of North:
True North
Each day the Earth rotates about its axis once. The ends
of the axes are the True North and South poles. True
North on a map is the direction of a line of longitude
which converges on the North Pole.

Grid North
The grid lines on Ordnance Survey maps divide the UK
into one kilometre squares, east of an imaginary zero
point in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Cornwall. The grid
lines point to a Grid North, varying slightly from True
North. This variation is smallest along the central
meridian (vertical line) of the map, and greatest at the
map edges. The difference between grid north and true
north is very small and for most navigation purposes can
almost always be ignored.

Magnetic North
A compass needle points to the magnetic north pole. The
magnetic north pole is currently located in the Baffin

Island region of Canada, and from the UK, is west of true


north. The horizontal angular difference between True
North and Magnetic North is called MAGNETIC VARIATION
or DECLINATION.
