Rationale

This unit entitled Weather is designed for 2st grade. The unit will integrate many
academic disciplines while teaching students about weather with specifics such as
the water cycle, clouds, precipitation and the four seasons.
Students will do a variety of activities to enhance their learning through weather.
First the students explore an introduction to the concept of weather. Then student
will experience through literature information on the precipitation and create a
raining cloud. Next students will learn to identify types of clouds, demonstrating
their new knowledge by creating different cloud forms with cotton balls. Then the
students will construct a water cycle activity representing its characteristics. Finally
the student will explore the features of the four seasons by drawing and coloring a
work sheet that goes along with it.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards, (3.5: C Earth
Science; 4.1: B Watersheds and Wetlands) the students will be producing works of
art, speaking and listening during discussions, applying process knowledge that
enables them to become independent leaders thought inquiry and design, and
study the dynamics of earth science, which includes the studies of forces of nature
that build earth and wear down earth.
When the unit is complete, the students will be able to describe different types of
weather, the processes of the water cycle, the four types of clouds, how to dress for
different weather, different precipitation and describe the four seasons. This content
is key in a students ability to understanding, explore, and explain the natural world
around them.
