It was early in the morning

when the devoted students of
IIM Ranchi turned up for the
much awaited celebration of
Saraswati Puja. The students
of IIM Ranchi dressed up in
traditional attire and beautifully decorated the Music
Room at Khelgaon (hostel) in
preparation for the puja. Piles
of books, as is the tradition,

adorned the goddess of music

and knowledge on both sides.
The ceremonies started at 6
am and went on for two blissful hours. The entire room was
bubbling with energy when
the very own priest of IIM
Ranchi started chanting the
mantras for the
of Pushpanjali. Though the
puja was organised by the

Bengali community of IIM

Ranchi, IIMR students from
all provinces had assembled to
worship the deity on this auspicious day.
The ceremonies came to an
end at around 8 am, after
which sweets and fruits were
distributed as prasaad among
the attendees. It was a festival
in its truest sense with people
eagerly clicking pictures
flaunting their traditional sarees and kurta pyjamas.
There was more to come in the
form of a glorious sandhya
aarti which was held at
around 8 pm in the evening.
This was attended by an even
larger number of people,
many of whom could not wake
up in the early hours of the
day. With a promise to keep
the tradition going, the students started preparations for
the visarjan which conducted
the next day. The entire event
was a celebration of learning
at Indian Institute of Management Ranchi.

Lohri, a Night of Song, Dance and Warmth at IIM Ranchi

IIM Ranchi students celebrated the festival of Lohri with
great enthusiasm this year.
This harvest festival, mainly
celebrated in the North Indian
states of Punjab, Haryana and
Himachal Pradesh marks the
end of winter and ushers in
spring. The Cultural Committee of IIMR organized the
event. Keeping in tune with
Lohri tradition, the students
built a bonfire and danced
around it with great joy and
gaiety. Students dressed up in
colourful traditional clothing
and threw rewaries, popcorn
and sesame seeds into the

flames as part of the celebrations. It was a night full of

song, dance and laughter at

IIMR.

On this Republic Day, in their
constant pledge to give back to
the society, Samarpan, the
CSR club of IIM Ranchi, partnered with JSACS, Round
Table India, VBDA Ranchi, FIBD and Life Savers to organize a blood donation drive at the IIM Ranchi
hostel premises. The blood
donation drive saw some 48
donors, 8 girls and 40 boys,
donating their blood for a noble cause.
On this day, since early morning, the excited students lined
up to donate blood. All donors
went through pre-medical

check-ups such as Blood Pressure, Haemoglobin and Body

Mass Index checks, before
donating their blood. Stringent rules and regulations
were followed to make sure
that it was safe for the donors
to donate their blood. Post
blood donation, the donors
were provided with filling refreshments. The donated units
of blood have been handed
over to the hospital.
The IIM Ranchi students participated whole-heartedly in
the blood donation drive and
were constantly cheered and
motivated by their friends,

which kept the spirits of these

donors high throughout the
day. Apart from the students,
the staff of IIM Ranchi also
came forward to donate blood.
The event saw participation
from the residents of Khelgaon Society as well. This was
the second blood donation
drive held at IIM Ranchi in
the academic year, 2014-2015.

The ninth Indian Institute of Management was established at Ranchi in 2010. This was made possible
with the extensive support of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jharkhand, working under the guidance of Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
We started at a time when competition and aggression was prevalent in management education. Understanding the need to incorporate right values in young minds, IIMR was started to incorporate right values in
young minds and impart education for the information age that encourages networking and collaborative
advantage.
IIM Ranchi currently offers a two year PGDM in General management and another two year fulltime
programme on Human Resources Management (PGDHRM), Fellow Program in Management and 18
month part time Diploma in Management (PGEXP). We have also launched a certified Barefoot Manger
program to promote entrepreneurship and to impart livelihood skills among the school drop outs and illiterates.
Our Programs are different and we are an institute with a difference.

Letter from the Editor

It is not in the still calm of life,
or the repose of a pacific station,
that great characters are formed.
The habits of a vigorous mind
are formed in contending with
difficulties.
-Abigail Adams
Many a times I have been asked by
my friends about what character
am I or would like to be from the
amusing and enlightening story of
Who Moved my Cheese written
by Dr. Spencer Johnson. Hem,
Haw, Sniff or Scurry, who live in a
maze and are always in search of
their cheese. Sniff and Scurry- who
are always exploring, looking for
their cheese, continuously working
hard, never being arrogant of their
success and always understanding
the fact that change is inevitable
and we should be prepared for it,
and at the same can always empathize with the human characters of
the book. Hem and Haw - intelligent, sophisticated, looking for
their cheese, being possessive
about it, unable to accept change,
taking things for granted in their
arrogance, and who so resemble us,
this question of who am I out of
these four puts me in a dilemma
every time.
Ideally, all of us would have loved
to be Haw, who after experiencing
the havoc of not moving ahead
with change and realizing the can-

kerous nature of having a stagnant

life, takes it as a challenge to move
ahead. He has to undergo the journey of self introspection before
being able to appreciate the beauty
of life and understand that it is
always better to move on, after all
the journey is more important than
the destination. Moreover, he
shows true friendship, when even
after being left alone by Hem, he
writes his learning on the walls of
the maze so that Hem could follow
those hints and move ahead.
But what about Hem, who is happy and arrogant till the time he
loses his cheese? Even though he
knows that the environment has
changed, he is stuck on his past
glory. Change is not a challenge for
him rather a burden. He still waits
for his cheese to come back to him
and blames the world for his misery. He considers Sniff and Scurry
below his par, rejects the sound
advice given to him by Haw, rather
becomes hostile towards him, fails
to cope up with his situation and
yet considers himself not responsible for his cause. Like him, we
sometimes see ourselves falling in
this trap of stability. How many
times have we not seen organizations failing and losing their business, because of taking things for
granted and not able to manage
change? Dreaming of the destina-

tion and yet afraid of the journey.

Hem and Haw started from the
same place, took the same route,
had the same destination in mind
and yet one got lost in the midst
considering the mirage of milestone as the final destination and
one continued to the journey, valuing it more than his target.
George Bernard Shaw once rightly
said Progress is impossible
without change, and those who
cannot change their minds cannot change anything. Is the
journey towards accepting change
so difficult to uptake?
