1) Suppose that a hospital charges you $220 per day if you

stay in a private room, and $166 per day if you stay in a
room for four people. Assume that the amount you pay is the
sum of a constant amount (for the services you receive) and
an amount which varies inversely with the number of people
the room will hold (to pay for your share of the room).
a. Calculate the constant amount you will pay for services,
and the proportionality constant in the variation
function.
b. What does the hospital charge for a room, exclusive of
the services to the patient?
c. How much would you expect to pay per day if you stayed in
i.
A semi-private room holding two people?
ii. A ward holding 20 people?

2) Whether or not you feel a shock depends on how high the

current is and how long the current is applied. According
to Weiss Law, the shock can be felt if the current is
greater than or equal to a constant plus an amount that
varies inversely with the length of the time the current is
applied. Suppose that you can feel a current of 30
milliamperes (ma) applied for 2 milliseconds (ms). A
current of 20 ma can just be felt when applied for 4 ms.
a. Write the particular inequality expressing current that
can be felt in terms of time.
b. How many milliamperes can be felt if the current is
applied for 10 ms?
c. What is the minimum length of time a current of 100 ma
could be applied and still felt?
d. How low a current could be felt if it were applied for a
long period of time?
e. Plot the graph inequality in part a.

3) The trade in value of a car depreciates with time. The

trade in value of any particular make and model can be
found in the blue book which is published each month.
Suppose you own a car that is presently 20 months old, and
whose trade in value is $8000. Five months ago the trade in
value was $9000.
a. Let t be the number of months old the car is. Let f(t) be
the predicted trade in value if a linear function is
assumed. Let g(t) and h(t) be the predicted trade in
value if exponential and inverse (fractional power)
variation functions are assumed, respectively. Write
particular equations for f(t), g(t), and h(t).
b. Use each of the three functions to predict the trade in
value when the car is 60 months old.
c. Use each of the three functions to predict the trade in
value when the car was new.
d. Based on your answers to part b and c, which of the three
kinds of functions is most reasonable for predicting the
trade in value over a period of time?
