Midway ISD Assistant Principal Chosen as 2015 National Assistant Principal for Texas
Austin, TX A champion for children, Hewitt Elementarys Heather Metzgar has been selected as
the 2015 National Assistant Principal for Texas by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors
Association.
Assistant principals are key to a schools success, TEPSA Executive Director Harley Eckhart said.
We are proud to recognize Heather as an exceptional ambassador for education. Her compassion,
leadership and dedication to improve student learning are an inspiration to all of us.
Serving in her fourth year as assistant principal, Metzgars innovative ideas and her love of
education are evident in her daily work. Whether creating programs that target the mind, body and
heart of students or collaborating with high school teachers on projects that impact learning for all
Midway students, Metzgar focuses on the whole child and uses this knowledge to plan and
implement highly effective initiatives. In a recommendation letter Midway ISD Assistant
Superintendent Jeanie Johnson wrote, Heather has solid capabilities to research and learn, followed
by the strong ability to fully train and teach others in order to fully implement needed initiatives on
her campus. Her life work is focused upon children, with a loving, kind-hearted, supportive and
encouraging mindset.
The peer-selected award recognizes assistant principals who have demonstrated a positive impact
on their students and learning. Criteria includes:
A commitment to excellence and exceptional leadership as evidenced by student
achievement and programs designed to meet the academic and social needs of all
students.
Firmly established community ties and respect from teachers, students, and the
community.
Exceptional leadership in a particular school program.
The National Assistant Principal of the Year award is sponsored by TEPSA in coordination with the
National Association of Elementary School Principals. Horace Mann supports the Texas program.
