Attempt All Questions.

SECTION A
1- Attempt any four questions. Each carries equal marks.

(5x4=20)

a) Explain distillation and name its various types .

b) What is relative volatility? Explain its application in distillation.
c) A mixture (liq. form) containing mole fraction of benzene 40% and toluene 60% is separated
in distillation column. If mole fraction of toluene in vapour phase is .79 then find the relative
volatility of the mixture.
d) Name various methods for obtaining theoretical plates? Write the assumptions involved in
any one of the method of distillation.
e) Define reflux ratio? Explain the variation of plates, condenser, re-boiler loads in the case of
different reflux conditions.

2- Attempt any four questions. Each carries equal marks.

(5x4=20)

a) Draw mcCabe-thiele diagram showing all operating line and equilibrium curve. Write the
equation of all the operating line shown in mcCabe-thiele diagram?
b) Define quality? Find the slope of feed line if feed is 40% liquid?
c) Write equation of material balance, component balance for differential distillation? Derive
Rayleigh equation?
d) What is azeotropic distillation? Mention the desired characteristics of azeotropic agent?
e) What is flash vaporization? Write all the material balance, component balance and heat
balance equation?

3- Attempt any two questions. Each carries equal marks.

(10x2=20)

(a) An equimolar saturated vapour mixture of A(more volatile) and B at 1 atm is subjected to
equilibrium condensation yield 50% of the feed as liquid. If the relative volatility is constant
then what will be the mole fraction of A in the equilibrium liquid phase? Calculate the mole
fraction of A in the equilibrium liquid phase if value of relative volatility is given as 2.
(2=1.414)
(b) Using Fenske equation, calculate the minimum number of trays required in a distillation
column to separate an equimolar binary mixture of components A and B into an overhead

fraction containing 99 mol% A and a bottom fraction containing 98 mol% B. Assume relative
volatility as 2.
(c) A binary feed containing 25 mol% liquid and 75 mol% vapour is separated a staged
distillation column. The mole fraction of the more volatile component in the distillate product
is 0.95. The q-line intersects the operating line of the enriching section at (0.35, 0.6).
Calculate the value of reflux ratio R.
