Q.No. Question Description M.M.

1. Ta) A binary distillation column 2+2
separates 100 mol/h of a feed
mixture into distillate 'D' and
bottom product 'W'. The McCabe-
Thiele diagram for this process is
given in figure 1. Relative volatility 0.38
for the binary system is 2.4
(constant). Calculate operating reflux
ratio and distillate and bottom flow
rates.

If for a feed mixture, A,. is latent heat of vaporization of feed mixture, 1
H,,= enthalpy of saturated vapour feed, H, = enthalpy of saturated liquid
feed and H, = enthalpy of feed. Write the expression for "q" factor of feed.
2. a) Describe azeotropic & extractive distillation processes, which one is more 3
desirable and why?
b) It is desired to fractionate 163 kmol/h of di- ethylamine (DEA) and tri- 2+3+1+1
ethylamine (TEA) solution containing 40 mol% of less volatile (TEA). A
continuous rectification column equipped with a total condenser is used for
this purpose. 92% of DEA present in feed, goes in distillate, also not more
than 2% of the TEA in the feed should he allowed to leave from the top. The
column is operated at 101.3 kPa. The feed is partially vaporized and is two-
third vapour. Determine the following:
i. The minimum number of plates graphically.
ii. Minimum reflux ratio and the number of plates if the operating reflux
ratio is 25% in excess of the minimum.
iii. The feed plate location.

iv. The number of plates required if the overall plate efficiency is 7%.

The equilibrium data for benzene-toluene system at 101.3 kPa is:

3. a) Write down the steps involved in determination ofnumber o f id ea trays y
using Ponchon-Savarit method (with figure).
b) 65 kmol of a mixture of n-heptane and n-octane charge having 45 mol% of [2+2]
n-octane is to be batch distilled. The relative volatility of n-heptane in the
mixture is 3.15.
i. 11 40 kmole of the solution is vaporized and condensed as the distillate.
calculate the concentration of accumulated distillate.
ii. If the concentration of the accumulated distillate is found to be 82 mol%
n-heptane, calculate its amount.

c) In liquid-liquid extraction, systems of three liquids: two pairs partially [2]

soluble describe the effect of temperature on solubility curve (with figure).
