SECTION -A

There are FOUR questions in this section. Answer any THREE.

Please use the Appendix wherever necessary.

1. (a) Water has the highest density at 4°C temperature. How does this unusual behavior
impact the phase diagram of water? What happens to the phase diagram when you add a

small amount of glucose to pure water? Draw the diagram and ~xplain this effect. (3+3+4=10)

(b) Pure 2-methyl-2-propanol has a freezing point of 25.50°C, however it absorbs water
(as an impurity) on exposure to humid air, If the freezing point of a 100.0 g sample of

2-methyl-2-propanol is 24.59°C, how many grams of water are present in the sample? (8)

(c) Osmotic pressure is a colligative property that can be used to determine the molar
mass of an unknown substance .. The osmotic pressure is determined by measuring 'the
height of the column of solution and converting this value to mm of Hg (1 mm Hg.= I
torr, 760 torr = I atm). Using the concept of osmotic pressure, calculate the molar mass
of insulin if 20.0 mg is dissolved in 10.0 mL of solution to give a resulting osmotic

pressure of 6.48 torr at 25°C. (8)

(d) Calculate the van't Hoff factor (i) for HF if the freezing point of a 0.50 m aqueous

solution is -1.00°C. What percentage of the HF is dissociated at this concentration? (9)

2. (a) Acetic acid is a weak electrolyte and hydrochloric acid is a strong electrolyte. Briefly
describe the electrolytic properties of the equimolar solution of these two electrolytes
with appropriate plots. How can you determine the limiting values of the molar

conductivity of these two solutions? (4+4=8)

(b) Using Table 2 provided in the Appendix calculate the limiting molar conductivity of
hydrochloric acid and acetic acid. If the molar conductivity of 0.00241 M acetic acid is
7.896 x 10-5 S cm -1. Calculate the degree of deprotonation and the dissociation constant

for acetic acid? (10)

(c) The boiling point and freezing point of sulfur dioxide are 210°C and 272.7°C (at 1

atm), respectively. The triple point is 275.5°C and 1.65 x 10-3 atm, and its critical point is

at 157°C and 78 atm. On the basis of this infonnation, draw a rough sketch of the phase

diagram of S02 and indicate the degrees of freedom at each equilibrium and regions. (9)

(d) Vapor pressures of liquids depend on the temperature. Estimate the molar heat of
vaporization of a liquid whose vapor pressure doubles when the temperature is raised

from 85°C to 95°C. (8)

3. (a) For the reaction X2 + y + Z ~ XY + XZ, it is found that doubling the concentration
of X2, doubles the reaction rate, tripling the concentration of Y triples the rate, and

doubling the concentration of Z has no effect. (3+3+4=10)

(i) What is the rate law of this reaction?

(ii) Why is it that the change in the concentration of Z has no effect on the rate?

(iii) Suggest a mechanism for the reaction that is consistent with the rate law.

(b) The decomposition of dinitrogen pentoxide has been studied in carbon tetrachloride

solvent (CCI4) at a certain temperature: (10)

fN2051(M) Initial Rate (MIs)

0.92 0.95 x 10-5
1.23 1.20 x 10-5
1.79 1.93 x 10-5
2.00 2.10 x 10 5
2.21 2.26 x 10 5

Determine graphically the rate law for the reaction and calculate the rates constant.

(c) At the start of a reaction, there are 0.351 mol N2, 3.67 x 10-2 mol H2 and 7.51 x 10-4
mol NH3 in a 3.75-L reaction vessel at 375°C. If the equilibrium constant (Ke) for the

reaction N2(g) + 3 H2(g) <=> 2NH3(g) is 1.2 at this temperature, decide whether the
system is at equilibrium. If is not, predict which way the net reaction will proceed to

reach equilibrium. (8)

(d) The pressure of the reacting mixture CaC03(s) <=> CaO(s) + C02(g) at equilibrium is

0.105 atm at 350°C. Calculate Kp nad Kc for this reaction. (7)
