SECTION C
12. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
Chemical kinetics is the study of the rates of transformation of chemical compounds
from reactant species into products. The rate of a reaction is defined to be the rate of
decrease with time of the reactant concentration (in number of moles or molecules per
unit volume) due to chemical reaction(s), or, equivalently, the rate of increase of the
product concentration. Therefore the rate of chemical reactions, as well as the effect
of various factors such as concentration, temperature, catalyst, and so forth, are
determined quantitatively. The reaction kinetics of the pseudo first order for canola
methyl ester synthesis is studied under ultrasonic-assisted conditions.(Coutsey : Prabir
Basu, in Biomass Gasification, Pyrolysis and Torrefaction (Third Edition), 2018)

(i)Express the rate of the following reaction in terms of the formation of ammonia:
N2(g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g)
(ii) If the rate constant of a reaction is k = 3 × 10-4 s -1 , then identify the order of the
reaction. Calculate it’s half life period
OR
a)Write an example for zero order reaction
b)Draw a graph for zero order reaction [R] vs Time. What is the slope of the graph?
(iii) The conversion of molecules X to Y follows second order kinetics. If
concentration of X is increased to three times how will it affect the rate of formation
of Y ?
(iv) Write the rate expression for the following reaction
CH3COOC2H5 +H2O → CH3COOH +CH3CH2OH (1+2+1+1)
