7. An organic compound ‘A’ which has characteristic odour, on treatment with NaOH forms two (3)
compounds ‘B’ and ‘C’. Compound ‘B’ has the molecular formula C7H8O which on oxidation with
CrO3 gives back compound ‘A’. Compound ‘C’ is the sodium salt of the acid. ‘C’ when heated with

a)

b)

OR

Account for the following:

(a) Gabriel phthalimide synthesis is not preferred for preparing aromatic primary
amines.
(b) On reaction with benzene sulphonyl chloride, primary amine yields product soluble in alkali

SECTION C
12. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow. (5)
Order of a chemical reaction can be defined as the sum of power of concentration of reactants in the
rate law expression is called the order of that chemical reaction. Reactions can be first order
reaction, second order reaction, pseudo first order reaction etc. depends on the concentration of the
reactants. Order of a reaction is an experimental value. It means it is an experimentally determined
parameter. It can have fractional value as well.
If experimental rate law expression is given for a reaction, then we can deduce the order of that
reaction as well. For example, consider a reaction –

PRE-TERM-II/CHEM-XII Page 3 of 4
aA + bB→P
and rate law is given as –  rate = k[A]x [B]y
order of reaction for the above reaction on the basis of given rate law can be written as follows
– order of reaction = x + y.

lets take an example:

Hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbon is often achieved using solid platinum catalyst. The catalyst
substantially increases the rate of the reaction. However limited surface area results in no change in
rate upon changing either of the concentration.
a) What is the order of the reaction given in above example and write its unit?
b) Draw the graph of conc with time for the above example.
c) Write the rate equation for the reaction A2 + 3B2 → 2C, if the overall order
of the reaction is zero.
d) The rate constant for a reaction of zero order in A is 0.0030 mol L-1 s-1. How
long will it take for the initial concentration of A to fall from 0.10 M
to 0.075 M?
OR

The decomposition reaction of ammonia on platinum surface ,

2NH3 (g) → N2(g)+3H2(g) is a zero order reaction with k= 2.5 x 10-4 M/s What are the rates
of production of N2 and H2 ?
