has an internal choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the
passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
29 Oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction is a type of chemical reaction 4
that involves a transfer of electrons between two species. An
oxidation-reduction reaction is any chemical reaction in which the
oxidation number of a molecule, atom, or ion changes by gaining
or losing an electron. Redox reactions are common and vital to
some of the basic functions of life, including photosynthesis,
respiration, combustion, and corrosion or rusting.
In spontaneous reactions, energy is released which can be used to
do useful work. The rection is split into two different half
reactions. Two different containers are used and a wire is used to
drive the electrons from one side to the other and a Voltaic cell is
created. A salt bridge is also connected to the half cells. The
reading of the voltmeter gives the cell voltage or cell potential.

a) Is silver plate anode or cathode?

b) What will happen if the salt bridge is removed?
c) How many seconds does it require to reduce 3 moles of
Ag+ to Ag with 2 A current?
