Have the students conduct a
risk assessment in groups on
a task that they are all
familiar with such as washing
a car and have them
experience the complexity
and power that come with
doing risk assessments well
even when you think you
understand the risks.

That the student would


recognise that there are
various aspects to a risk
assessments and that it is a
process that people need to
understand to get the best out
of.
Hoping that this discussion
gives the students a common
context to understand the
lecture material at a greater
depth to enhance learning by
having practical example to
use to recall information.
The second task will build on
the first task and the lecture
material.

Method Statement

Give the students a simple


workplace and get them to
write a safe work method
statement for a simple task.
Teach them key elements of a
SWMS, the language , length,
how to separate tasks into
subtasks.

Complete SWMS that could be


used in a workplace situation

completed by individual
students.
