Genre Research

Horror is a genre that is meant to evoke fear from its audience, using peoples most
primal fears. It was inspired by writers such as Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker.
Horror films often deal with viewers' nightmares, fears and terror of the unknown.
Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or
person, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Other elements
include ghosts, extraterrestrials, vampires, werewolves, demons, gore, torture,
vicious animals, evil witches, monsters, zombies, cannibals, and serial killers.
Movies about the supernatural are not necessarily horrific however they are meant to
evoke fright from people.

Many horror films have been created over the years. A few of the famous ones are:
. A Nightmare on Elm Street
. Friday the 13th
.The Conjuring

The first depictions of supernatural events occurred in some short silent films, which
were created by film pioneer Georges Mlis in the late 1890s. The best known short
film was called Le Manoir du Diable which is credited as being the first horror film to
be created. The word horror wasnt used until the 1930s, after Universal Pictures
released Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931).
