Part A (5 * 2 = 10 marks)
Answer All the Questions
Mention the condition that induces the formation of Built up edge.
How the tool life is estimated?
Compare orthogonal and oblique cutting.
What are the factors affecting tool life?
Define machinability of a metal.
Part B (40 marks)
Answer All the Questions
a) (i) In an orthogonal cutting test with a tool of rake angle 10
the following observations were made:
Chip thickness ratio= 0.3. Horizontal component of the cutting
force =1290 N, Vertical component of the cutting force = 1650 N.
from the Merchants theory, calculate the various components of
the cutting forces and the coefficient of friction at the chip tool
interface.

(ii) Mention the desirable properties of cutting tool material and
explain. Name the various cutting tool materials.
