Solution - Assignment 1
Question 1:
The frustum is formed by rotating the shaded area around the x - axis. Determine the moment of inertia Ix and
express the result in terms of the total mass m of the frustum. The frustum has a constant density.

y
Question 2:
The thin homogenous plate is of uniform thickness
and mass m. Use the method of integration to
determine its moment of inertia about x, y and z axes.
Also, determine the moment of inertia about the axis
through the centre of mass that is perpendicular to the
plane of plate.

Question 3:
The mass of the homogeneous thin plate is 2 kg.
Determine the moment of inertia of the plate about the
axis through point O that is perpendicular to the plate.

Alternative method follows:

An important note for the Grader

When students use this method, they must show all the derivations referred to as From
Appendix B. Actually, this is referred from Engineering Mechanics, Dynamics by Anthony
Bedford Wallace Fowler, Fifth Edition.
Other than that give them only 25% of the marks for this question.

Question 4:
Determine the mass moment of inertia of the pendulum about an axis
perpendicular to the page and passing through point O. The slender rod
has a mass of 10 kg and the sphere has a mass of 15 kg.

Question 5:
If the large ring, small ring and each of the spokes in the
figure below have a mass of 50 kg, 7.5 kg,
and 10 kg, respectively, determine the mass moment of
inertia of the wheel about an axis perpendicular to the page
and passing through point A.

Question 6:
When the forward speed of the 2250-kg truck shown
was 9.1 m/s, the brakes were suddenly applied, causing
all four wheels to stop rotating. It was observed that the
truck skidded to rest in 6 m. Determine the magnitude of
the normal force at each wheel as the truck skidded to
rest.

Question 7:
When the crane shown in the figure starts to move the load, it has a constant horizontal acceleration
to the right that causes the 800 kg. load to swing back so that the supporting cables are at the 5
degrees angle shown. What is the acceleration of the crane and the tensions in the cables at A and B?
