Calculate unit rate from rates in real world

Objective:

Student will find the unit rate of real world

problems like MPG or cost per unit.

Big Understanding: Students will gain the knowledge of everyday life experiences in their purchasing power.

Summative Assessment Evidence: Ticket out the door - Students will determine the unit rate for 4 items that cost
$15.00.
Higher Level Questions to Incorporate: Why do you think its important to be able to do this? What part of your life
can you improve immediately as a result of knowing how to calculate cost per unit?

Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns:

Teacher Input/Modeling: The teacher will show a brief YouTube video, followed by a short lecture explaining the
difference between rate and unit rate, as well as the steps necessary to find the unit rate.
Guided Practice: Students will write a ratio and simplify it.
Check for Understanding: Students will show the teacher the white board and be re-taught as needed. After several
problems students will be assigned a practice homework page.
Independent Practice: Students will practice problems on a white board/ piece of paper.
Ending, Summary / Reflection: Where do you see that this will be useful in your life today, 5 years, 20 years?

Materials / Resources: White Boards, Expo Markers, Paper Towels.

Grouping Patterns: 2 or 3 groups for Hook; Individual

Technology: Projector, Internet access

Accommodations: Visually impaired students will occupy the front row of desk; learning impaired students
