Poverty Incidence by Subnational Region (% share of regions population)

Income Distribution in Thailand

Income inequality in Thailand is among the highest in Southeast Asia.
Various measures of income inequality show that Thailands income distribution
is skewed toward a small percentage of the population. The richest 20% of
households account for over half of total household incomes in Thailand.

Differences in regional per capita incomes are the key determinant of poverty
and inter-regional income inequality in Thailand. A negative relationship exists
between subnational per capita household incomes and the incidence of poverty,
indicating that regional disparities in the level of economic development is a
key determinant of poverty and regional inequality in Thailand.
The poor are overrepresented in the agriculture sector. Low-income
families and poor families are heavily concentrated in agriculture, with almost
half of the poor engaged in the agriculture sector. About 90% of the poor reside
in rural areas.
