Thisisthe'worm'seyeview'ofthispoeticwork,butnottheinvocationofdeityof
speech/poetics.Theinvocationisinnextverse.
Aparableissaidaboutthisverse.Asusualwithanyotherpoet,Jayadevawasalso
saidtobeatwiddlerofhisthumbs,andseeingthismaternaluncledauntshimfornot
takingupanyjoborprofessionlikeanyotheryoungster.Jayadevarefusestrivialjobs
anddeclareshimselfasapoetofparexcellence,andhecanportrayayam'that'godin
aninnovativemannerandinoffthebeatentrack.Thenhismaternalunclequestions
whothatgodis,andthethemeof'that'poetry,about'that'god.Thenthispoem
emergedfromthedepthsofheartofJayadevaaboutayam,thatgodandhis
sequestereddeeds.Atthelastwordsofthisverse,thatunclespranguptohisfeetinire,
andalmostsaidtohavestifledJayadevatodeath,forutteringsuch'blasphemous

composetherestofthiswork,andputthenextverse,aninvocatorypoem,tostylus.
Thus,thoughunconnected,thispoemremainedattheheadoftheworkasaprologue,
preambleetc.,inthepatternofaashiirvaada,vastunirdehsa,mangalaaadiini'asortof
blessings,indicativeofthetopicofpoetry,andforauspiciousbeginningofthepoetic
worksetcwhichthepoetsusuallyemploy.HerethelovegameofRdhaandMdhava
itselfbecametheauspicious,blessingapriori,andcontentofthispoeticwork.That
way,withoutnaminghimasKrishna,Govinda,orMdhavaetc.,thepoetputsthe
pronounonthetongueofNanda,thefatherofKrishna,asayam,ayambhiiruH...onthe

nextverse.

home,forheisstillaboy...kopauktisaidinanger...''Rdha,don'tyouknowthatheis
boyishandnaivelytimorous...whenitisduskinganddarkening...whatisityouplayin
nights...yougohome,andwhilegoingtakethisfellowalsotohishome...nonight
wanderings...'tattvaukti'withsomesubtext...'Rdha,tvamevayoualonearehis,
gR^iham'house,personifiedbywifeyouonbecomingwife...'praapaya'makehim
prosperous...''OnyouraccountKrishnabecameahouseholderhenceyoualonelead
himforthandenrichhisprosperityashiswife...'
Rdhadidnotgethercherisheddesirefulfilledinatrice,oratasnapoffinger.She
hadtoundergoherhistoricalordeal,puttotestbyKrishna.Whyshouldshe?Whenshe
iswilling,whenKrishnaisatherside,whenfatherNandapermitted,whenhermaid
encouragesher...isshestillputtotest?Thesewouldbethepertinentdoubtsthatarise,
thoughtheyarenotthequestionsinreality.Yes!Sheisputtolitmustestbythismost
mischievousKrishna,andshehadtoshedhertears,sobhersobs,frownher
resentmentsetc.Whereallthishashappened?Oneachandeverypathwaytohome,at
eachandeverytree,andineachofthebowers.Krishnaseemstobethere,butactually
heisnottherethoughheissupposedlyunavailable,buthisflutingisaudiblevery
nearly.So,todepictthatatruedevoteehastoundergoastepbystepprocessforthe
culminationofhis/herardentdesire,thepoetindicatesthattherearemanyapathway
totread,manyarethetreesofwisdom,andmanyarethebowerstocontemplatelonely
andsolitarily,notonlyforRdhabuttoanydevotee.Allthesearegodsendgiftsof
natureandhumans.

kuule'onthebanksofYamuna,excitingenvironofYamuna,withbreezeswafting
coolnessofYamunawatersandfragrancesofflowersontoitsbanks.Theopenness,
solitude,rivers,waters,flowers,fragrances,allofthemmadethatplaceheavenly.
Aboveall,ayam,'that'godishere.Thenwhatmoredoesadevoteerequireforhis/her
dedication,inordertocommingleinhimphysically,inmortal'sparlance,and
psychicallyinadevotee'sexperience.
OntheuseofultramundanewordmaadhavalakSmii's,husbandVishnumaybe
observed,evenwhenKrishnaismanifestlyamortal,andavailablejustbeforetheeye.
ThoughKrishnaisVishnuandthoughRukmini,hisfirstconsort,islakSmii,Krishna's
longingforanephemeralandpoeticembodimentcalledRdhaismore,anditsuggests
thatgodisinclinedmoretowardsrealdevotees,ratherthanforhiscoequals,like
RukminiorlakSmiiandthelike.
