Venice,theBishopricofTrent,the
NapoleonicKingdomofItalyandlater
(18151918)totheAustroHungarian
empire.SincetheendofWorldWarI(3
November1918),RivadelGarda,withthe
restoftheTrentino,becamepartofthe
KingdomofItaly.
Rivawastheterminusforthe24kilometres
(15miles)longMoriArcoRivarailway
line,openedin1891.However,therailway
closedin1936andtherailwayterminushas
beenconvertedintoarestaurant.

TheMuseoCivicoislocatedintheRocca,a
medievalfortresswithquadrangularbastions,
placedonthelake,boundedbyacanalwith
drawbridge.Itwasthefortressofthenoble
familyScaligeri(1124),whobecametheLords
ofVerona.Itwasrebuiltseveraltimesandit
wasusedbytheAustriansasbarracksinthe
18thcentury.Itisfrequentlytheseatofcultural

activities,especiallyduringthesummermonths.
ThemedievalbelfryTorreApponalewasfirstmentionedin
1273,butisprobablyolder.Itbelongedtothefirstfortressof
Riva,thatnolongerexists.Modificationsweremadein1555and
itwasraisedto34metres(112ft).ThePiazzaIIINovembreis
situatedbetweenthebelfryandtheharbour.Thecityhall
comprisesthePalazzoPretoriofrom1375(theformercantonal
courthouse)andthePalazzodelProvveditore(thegovernor's
palace),builtbetween1472and1485.
ThecitygatesPortaSanMarco(11thcentury),builtbythe
TorreApponale
Venetians,andPortaSanMichele(13thcentury),atthePiazza
Cavour,areremnantsofthemedievalcitywalls.ThePortaSan
MichelehasasmallbattlementedbelfryfortheparochialchurchofMariaAssunta.Thischurchwas
originallyaromanesquegothicbuildingfromthe14thcentury(attestedbyamedievalreliefatits

southernside),butwasrebuiltinbaroquestylein1728.Ithasasinglenaveandninebaroquealtars.The
altarpiecesweremadebylocalartists,suchasIgnazioMartinoOliaridaRiva,GiuseppeCraffonarada
RivaandGiovanniCaliaridaVerona.ThefrescointhedomeisbythebaroquepainterGiuseppeAlberti
(16641730).
ThechurchChiesadell'Inviolata,dominatingtheLargoMarconi,isconsideredamongthemostbeautiful
baroquechurchesinTrentino.Itisanoctagonalbuildingwiththebelfrynexttoit.Itcontainsthe
altarpieces"SanCarloBorromeo"and"SanGerolamo"bytheManneristpainterPalmailGiovane.In
themiddleoftheoctagonaldomeisaBaroquefresco"ThecoronationofMariainHeaven".
PlacesofgeologicalinterestinthevicinityincludeTennoLake,LagodiLedro(withits
paleoethnographicmuseum),andtheVaronefalls.

Sport
Withitstwoharbours,RivadelGardaiswellequippedforsailingandwindsurfing.Rockclimbingand
mountainbikingarealsopracticed.Basketballisalsoverypopularandprobablythemainsportofthe
town:thelocaltopteam,theGSRivaGardacartiere,playsintheItaly's3rdnationaldivisionandforthe
"biggames"thePalaGardaarenaispackedwithupto2,000people.Thetownalsohasateam,Virtus
Riva,inthe"C1"division.
Mostpopulartypeofrockclimbingisviaferrata.OneofthemostnotableroutesisViadellAmicizia,
whichis650metershigh,endsattheheightof1200meters(routestartsapprox.atthemiddleofthe
mountainatabout600metersabovethetown)andlastsabout2:40hrs.onaverage.[4]
