Celebrate Asia in America!

Renewing America's PromiseInauguration 2009 at

the Freer and Sackler Galleries Smithsonian
Institution

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery present artists'
workshops for children and their families as well as performances and
stories of Asian and Asian American celebration traditions. The Freer
Gallery is also home to a comprehensive collection of paintings by
American artist James McNeill Whistler. Step into the Freer's crown
jewel, Whistler's Peacock Room, named an icon of American art by
the National Endowment for the Humanities. Also on view is Gari
Melcher's full-length portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt (1908),
along with an autographed letter from Roosevelt inviting museum
founder Charles Lang Freer to visit him at the White House. The Freer
and Sackler Galleries are located on the National Mall, just steps from
the Smithsonian Metro stop and adjacent to the Smithsonian Castle.
