ACADEMY FOR MATH, ENGINEERING © SOENCE an aaoie To the Sterling Scholar Selection Committee, | teach Engineering and Robotics at the high school that Josh Martin attends, the Academy for Math, Engineering ‘and Science. | also coach the FIRST Robotics tearn of which Josh is the Chief Technical Team Leader. Through these classes and activities, 've come to know Josh well and i can honestly say that he is one of the best students {ve had the privilege of working with in my twelve-year teaching career. | rely on Josh as a teaching assistant in my Robotics class and his performance has far exceeded my expectations. Because of his outstanding expertise in Computer Aided Design (CAD) I'm having him teach those sections of the class, Not only does he have a deep knowledge of the CAD software package that we use (Solidworks), but he also knows a great deal about something that's not taught in the CAD tutorials... how to design parts for ‘manufacturabillty. If students aren't careful, their CAD designs could look wonderful but be completely impossible for a 3D printer or Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) manufacturing tool to praduce. Josh understands this issue well and has proven himself to be great at explaining this to my students and helping them to avoid this problem as they prepare CAD designs for the parts they need to make in my class. | trust you're familiar with FIRST robotics, an international competition where students design and build incredibly complex robots in only six weeks’ time. Based on Josh's outstanding performance as a team member in previous years the other coaches and | have selected him to be the Chief Technical Lead for this year’s team. What that title means is that Josh is the number one student responsible for making the key design decisions. That doesn’t mean that he alone dictates the robotic design... he does @ great job of involving the other students in the design process and the decision making process... but at the end of the day Josh does have the final say in technical ‘matters subject only to a veto by me and the other coaches, which we've have never had to use. in his role as the Chief Technical Lead Josh is also responsible for guiding the other students as they turn each of their subsystem designs into a completed robot. Josh teaches and leads the other students as they prepare their subsystem design documents, as they fabricate the parts, and as they then assemble and test the final robot. Josh’s approaches to problem solving are always creative and well thought out. He works incredibly hard and is someone on whom we can depend for any task that needs doing. The other coaches and | rely heavily on Josh and have come to trust his judgment and leadership abilities, The other students really look up to Josh and place their trust in him as a true leader. | sincerely hope that you will select Josh as the recipient of this year's Sterling Scholar award, pod, Douglas Hendricks Engineering, Robotics, and Physics Teacher ‘Academy for Math, Engineering and Science dhendricks@ames-sic.org AN EARLY COLLEGE FIGH SCHOOL PARTNERED WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH 5715 SoUTH 1300 Rast * SALT LAKE Crry, UT 84121 + PHON: 801.278.9460 * FAX: 801.277.9527 + WWWAMES-SLCORG
