The increase in the occurrence of existing diseases and the continual emergence of new or exotic diseases and re-emergence of old
diseases place increasing demands on healthcare delivery. In Malaysia, there has been rapid growth in the healthcare system over the
past few years. An efficient laboratory service is essential for a good healthcare system.
Appropriate healthcare management relies greatly on results of clinical laboratory investigations and patients lives may depend on the
experience and expertise of the Biomedical Scientist.
Malaysia has a vision to become a developed country by 2020. Much emphasis is given to various high-technology projects including
biomedical research. Promotion of biomedical research is essential for progress of medicine and advancement of healthcare.
The Biomedical Scientist, equipped with the appropriate knowledge and expertise, evolves with the changing trends in modern
technology to fulfill the trust and reliance expected of them.

The IMU Biomedical Science programme is uniquely designed to


produce graduates who are knowledgeable, competent and analytical.
The curriculum also emphasises on developing professionalism, ethics,
lifelong learners and critical thinkers. Students will be able to develop
knowledge, skills and attitudes through in-house training, practical
attachments as well as apprenticeship in selected disciplines. Students
will also have the experience of undertaking a research project.
All this training will produce readily employable graduates.

01 WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME?


Biomedical science is the study of basic sciences that relate to medicine including
biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, parasitology, pharmacology, haematology,
immunology, histopathology and cytopathology.
The IMU Biomedical Science programme has been designed for students who wish
to gain an understanding of the basic sciences that are related to medicine and to
develop skills in different biomedical areas.



The aim of this programme is to provide training for undergraduate biomedical


science students that would prepare them to work effectively in healthcare services
which includes diagnostics, therapeutics, determining the nature of diseases,
quality control, prevention, control and treatment of diseases.

This programme also aims to provide the students with technical and analytical
skills to carry out biomedical research. Furthermore, the programme also
prepares them to pursue postgraduate studies in a range of disciplines.

02 WHAT ARE THE KEY FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME?


The programme has incorporated key features to prepare the modern biomedical
scientist. These features offer an appreciable advantage by enabling students:
To have a sound knowledge of the functioning of the human body in
physiological and pathological states via the body-organ systems courses.



To develop knowledge, skills and attitudes through a structured in-house


learning experience. The learning experience will be delivered through
various teaching-learning approaches. In-house practical sessions will be
conducted using simulated and clinical specimens.

To gain practical experience while working under close supervision


alongside experts in the respective biomedical science disciplines,
through attachments at appropriate hospitals, diagnostic laboratories,
university and/or research laboratories.

To develop further laboratory experience and expertise while working


as an apprentice, under minimal supervision. This period of attachment
as an apprentice provides an opportunity to demonstrate the trainees
expertise in a prospective employment environment and a long-term
career prospect.

To acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes relating to the biomedical


science disciplines which would prepare the graduate for further
training in postgraduate biomedical science programmes, and
where feasible, medicine and allied health sciences.

To develop professionalism. Opportunities will be given to the


students to put theory into practice in their development as an
effective member of the healthcare team.



To develop their curiosity and enthusiasm for the biomedical


sciences through student-centred learning activities including
Portfolios of Learning, Problem-Based Learning and
Research Projects.

COMMENCEMENT

03 WHAT ARE THE TEACHING-LEARNING APPROACHES USED?


In addition to didactic large group teaching sessions (Plenaries), the programme is also
delivered through small group teaching sessions (Problem-based learning, Laboratory
practicals, Workshops, Computer-aided learning, Tutorials, Seminars, Presentations and
Attachments / Placements). Such small group teaching sessions will provide opportunities
for the development of a range of skills necessary for the biomedical scientist. The
projects in Semester 6 will provide opportunity for the student to conduct studies in
biomedical field and it is hoped that students will acquire critical thinking and analytical
skills necessary for postgraduate training later.

04 WHO ARE THE TEACHING STAFF?


All our academic staff (which include local and overseas trained lecturers) are full-time.
In addition, experienced academicians and researchers from Malaysian Universities
and research institutes, as well as consultants and biomedical scientists from private
diagnostics laboratories are also invited to teach the students.

05 WHAT ARE THE SEMESTER CONTENTS?

The curriculum is reviewed


periodically and is subject to change.

The MPU modules are compulsory modules imposed by Ministry of Higher Education
under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555). All students must take
these modules and pass as a prerequisite for the award of the degree. Some of these
modules will be taken at the beginning or the end of the programme while the rest will
be taken within the six semesters of the programme.

Biomedical scientists play an important role


in diagnosis of disease via the application of
histological techniques. Tissue samples from patients
are processed, stained with appropriate reagents and
examined for abberrations in cellular morphology or
arrangement. Expression of specific protein markers can
also be visualised with immunohistochemical stains. Many
malignancies, for instance, are diagnosed this way.

06 WHO WILL AWARD THE DEGREE?


The Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science degree is awarded by IMU. The partner
universities will award their respective degrees to students who transfer to their school.

07 HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?


Students will be assessed through their class tests, practical reports, workshops,
portfolios, projects, logbooks, written reports, presentations, dissertations and
end-of-semester examinations.

08 ARE THERE ANY INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENTS?


There will be 8 weeks of industrial placement in the attachment semester.

09 WHAT IS THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION?


The medium of instruction is English. Students who come from a system of
education in which the medium of instruction is not English are strongly
recommended to improve their proficiency in English by making their own
arrangements to attend additional English Language classes before entering
IMU.

Molecular biology technology is critical in the


development of biomedical science research.
The Biomedical Informatics and Genomics and Molecular
Diagnostics modules help students understand the methods
and applications of molecular biology.

10 WHAT SORT OF JOBS/CAREERS CAN BE UNDERTAKEN WITH


THIS DEGREE?
Biomedical scientists may be employed by public and private hospital laboratories,
public health laboratories and private pathology laboratories. Biomedical scientists
analyse specimens of blood and body fluid, enabling diagnosis of illness and
evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment. Their nature of work includes performing
chemical analysis of body fluids and haematological analysis of blood samples,
isolating micro-organisms and matching the blood of donors to recipient to ensure
compatibility.
Biomedical scientists may be involved in medical, veterinary and agricultural
research in universities and research/health institutions. Industries employing
biomedical scientists for research and development include pharmaceuticals,
biotechnology, chemicals, cosmetics and toiletries. Examples of biomedical
science research include research on causes and cures of diseases for example,
cancer, AIDS and hepatitis, animal cloning, gene therapy as well as discovery,
development and production of biopharmaceuticals, diagnostic products and
chemicals.
Biomedical science graduates can undertake postgraduate degrees in any
of the related disciplines. They could also pursue a career in education.
The biomedical science degree can be used as graduate entry into
medicine. Biomedical science graduates can also enter the police force in
the area of forensics or enter scientific journalism.

11 WHEN DO I APPLY FOR A PLACE IN IMU?


You can apply as soon as you have your forecast or actual results.

The research laboratory facilities and research staff provide


the training for students so that they are sufficiently competent
to pursue their postgraduate studies.

A/Prof Chen Yu Sui BSc (Hons), PhD (Monash)
A/Prof Chen Yu Sui has been teaching physiology in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences for 15
years. Her areas of interest include reproductive biology, endocrinology, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology.
A/Prof Chen Yu Suis interest in education lies mainly in Problem-based Learning (PBL) and had been a PBL co-ordinator
for Medical Programme for eight years. Besides this, she has played active roles in curriculum design for certain modules
in BPharm, Biomedical Science and Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture programmes. She was appointed Programme coordinator for Biomedical Science from 2009 to 2012. In more recent years, her interest has moved to inter-professional
learning which she believes is a critical component in making inter-professional practice more possible. A/Prof Chen Yu
Suis research interest is in natural products and their roles in inflammatory pathways especially in arthritis using animal
models. She also play supervisory role in undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Currently she has 17 publications
and 41 presentation papers.

Dr Chye Soi Moi BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD (Kaohsiung Med U)


Dr Chye Soi Moi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Biology, Cells and Molecules at IMU. Prior to this, she
was an Assistant Professor in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, and Taiwans Fooyin University. Dr Chye Soi Moi graduated
from Kaohsiung Medical University in Medical Technology and obtained PhD in 1998. Her research interests are in the
areas of immunodiagnostics of parasite infection, apoptosis and carcinogenicity pathways of hair dye components,
molecular mechanisms involving melatonin in complications of diabetes and neuroprotective effects of melatonin in
Parkinsons disease. Dr Chye Soi Moi is the author or co-author of over 20 ISI Journal articles, and reviewer of many
international journals in toxicology. She is currently the principal investigator and co-investigator in a number of research
projects. In research, Dr Chye Soi Moi and her team have developed a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic kit, which
enables early diagnosis in angiostrogyliasis patients. It has since won a research award and has been commercialised in
Taiwan.

Dr S Jeevathayaparan MSc (UOC), PhD (UOC), MI Chem (SL), MI Biol (SL), Charted Chemist (SL), Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (UOC)
Dr S Jeevathayaparan has 21 years of teaching experience as lecturer (1991 -1999) and senior lecturer (1999
to date) involving teaching Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in undergraduate medical, health sciences and
postgraduate programmes. He was awarded accreditation as a teacher in higher education in 1998 by Staff and
Educational Development Association, England. Dr S Jeevathayaparan was awarded a certificate of recognition for
scientific research (Presidential awards for research) by President of Sri Lanka, Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri
Lanka. His fields of interest in research are oral hypoglycemic activity of medicinal plants and mechanism of action,
Oxidative stress and antioxidants, Leptin and metabolic syndrome.

Dr Lim Chooi Ling BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, PhD (Immunobiology) (UPM)
Dr Lim Chooi Ling obtained her PhD in 2010, under the sponsorship of the National Science Fellowship. She has been
teaching mainly in the IMU Biomedical Science and Medical Biotechnology programmes for about 3 years in cancer
biotechnology and organ system modules. She had co-supervised an MSc student to completion and was the main
supervisor for several undergraduate research students. Her research areas include bioactivity of natural products in cell
lines which includes gene and protein expression, liver fibrosis and transforming growth factor-beta signaling. Dr Lim
Chooi Ling had presented her research work in various local and international conferences, and obtained a number
of awards including the Best Oral Presenter award in the International Seminar of Indonesian Society for Microbiology
(ISISM), Indonesia. She is currently the coordinator of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme, and works closely
with the Biomedical Science faculty towards the continual improvement of the innovative curriculum.

The IMU Biomedical Science programme has given me an excellent


foundation via its multi-disciplinary academic approach. Throughout
the course, I have been trained in various aspects which integrates
oral and written communication, problem-based learning and
thesis writing. The well-conducted laboratory sessions and
practical attachments provides the framework to become a
confident and skilled researcher. The knowledge gained at IMU
has enabled me to be one of the young researchers to be

ABOUT IMU
The International Medical University (IMU) is Malaysias first and most established private medical and
healthcare university with over 20 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education. The University is the
first university in Malaysia that offers conventional and complementary medicine, all under one roof.
Established in 1992, the University enjoys an international reputation, and provides a high standard of
education at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development level. IMUs
