Acids, Motion, Heat Study Guide

ACID AND BASE

Acid- taste sour, contain hydrogen, react with metals to produce hydrogen
Base- taste bitter, contain OH radical, feel slippery
Indicator- a substance that changes color when in an acid or base
ph-a number that tells whether a substance is an acid or a base
Acid- pH of 0-7
Base- pH of 7-14

Motion
Motion- simply a change in position
Average speed= distance
Time
Velocity- the speed and direction in which an object is moving
Acceleration- the rate of change in velocity

Newtons Laws of motion

1st law- in no force acts on an object at rest, it will remain at rest
2cd law- the amount of force needed to produce a given change in the
motion of an object depends on the mass of the object.
3rd law- if an object exerts a force on a second object , the second object will
always exert a force on the first object.

Inertia- the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion

Law of universal gravitation- gravitational force depends on the mass of two objects
involved and on the distance between them

Heat
Temperature- a measure of how fast an objects particles are moving
Thermometer- a device that measures temperature
Calorie- a unit of heat
Convection- flow of energy that occurs when a warm liquid or gas rises
Conduction- the movement of heat energy from on molecule to the next
Conductor- material through which heat travels easily
Insulator- material that does not conduct heat well
