Lesson Cycle

Lesson Title/Topic: Common Prefixes and Suffixes


Target Concept: Be able to recognize word commonality through the same prefixes or suffixes.
Standards/Rationale: 110.13. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 2, Beginning with
School Year 2009-2010. b) Knowledge and skills. 2) Reading/Beginning Reading
Skills/Phonics. Students use the relationships between letters and sounds, spelling patterns, and
morphological analysis to decode written English. Students will continue to apply earlier
standards with greater depth in increasingly more complex texts. Students are expected to:
(D) read words with common prefixes (e.g., un-, dis-) and suffixes (e.g., -ly, -less, -ful);
Lesson Objectives: The student will be able
to connect common words through their
prefixes or their suffixes with at least a 70%
passing rate.

Assessment: Before students leave, we will


go over their worksheets.

Materials: Flashcards on the smartboard to familiarize the children with some common words.
Whiteboard to write the words and color code the common prefixes or suffixes. Worksheet with
fill in the blank and word bank. Internet for songs and videos.
Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)
The teacher will:
Focus/Mental Set: Start the class off by
singing a song about prefixes and dancing to
prepare them for class. Display some example
words with color coded prefixes and suffixes
on the board for students to look at to start
familiarizing themselves with the
commonality of the words.
Teacher input: Bring the class to their
respective seats to prepare the class. Pass out
the worksheets and start explaining the
objective and what is expected of the
students. They are sitting in groups so they
are able to work together on the worksheets.
Play the song about words with common
prefixes and suffixes. Ask them what they
have learned from the video. Ask them if
anything was confusing. Start with the few
words written on the board as examples and
get them to say what the commonalties of the
words are. Ask each student to try and tell

Start the day with motion and music about the
words to get them ready for the day.

Watch the video and participate in the


discussion over the video. Look at the words
on the board and participate in the discussion
about the common prefixes and suffixes.
Students will each their chance to either tell

is or underline the common parts on the
board.

Guided practice: When the students are in
their groups give them the worksheets and
explain what is expected of them. Go over
some of the flash cards on the board to
introduce more words with common endings
or beginnings.
Independent Practice: Allow the students to
work on the work sheet and discuss with one
another about the different words. Add words
to the board for the students to discuss with
one another.
Closure: Briefly go over what they have
learned today with their input included. Go
over the worksheet with explanations over the
correct answers.
Options:
Enrichment: Enunciate each word with and
give a visual.
Modifications/Correctives:
Student(s) can use an app where they can scan
and then type their words in the appropriate
boxes. Give time for more one on one
teaching.
References:

Go to their respective groups to work on the


worksheets and find the right words to fill in
the blanks.

Work on the worksheets independently and


then in groups. Discuss the extra words and
how they would match up.

Ask any questions and share what they


learned. As they leave make sure they have a
corrected worksheet to take home and further
practice.

Reteach: Practice with worksheets and extra


words on the board.
